All clear at Miami airport after earlier evacuation

Miami-Dade Police said they were questioning a man who sparked an evacuation at a Miami International Airport concourse after he said he had dynamite in his luggage as he checked in the bag on Monday.

After an evacuation which lasted more than one hour, operations were back to normal at Concourse J, part of which had been closed. Passengers were evacuated to the curbside while the bomb squad was called in.

The concourse services international and domestic flights.

Researcher at EPFL proves that the strong electric charge observed at the interface between oil and water is not due to impurities

Water repelling molecules are said to be hydrophobic. The hydration or formation of water interfaces around hydrophobic molecules is important for many biological processes: protein folding, membrane formation, transport of proteins across an interface, the transmission of action potentials across membranes. It is involved as well in the process of creating mayonnaise, or in the fact that you can get rid of fat with soap. Hydrophobic interfaces although long studied, are poorly understood.

Here's an amusing kitchen-table experiment to illustrate waters unusual properties: put a drop of pure insulating oil in a glass of pure, non-conducting water, and create an electric field using two wires hooked up to a battery. You'll see the oil move from the negative to the positive pole of the little circuit you've created. You have created charge in a mixture that was neutral, and a huge amount of it too, judging from the speed at which the droplets move. The same thing happens for gas bubbles in water; the phenomenon of charging applies to all hydrophobic/water interfaces.

It's not a new discovery; scientists have observed the phenomenon in the middle of the 19th century. But despite more than a century of research, the reason why such a huge electric charge exists is still the subject of heated debate.

In an article published this week in Angewandte Chemie a journal of reference in the field EPFL scientist Sylvie Roke challenges a hypothesis put forward last spring in the same journal. With experimental proof to back her up, the holder of the Julia Jacobi chair in photomedicine makes her case: the phenomenon is not caused by the inevitable "impurities" present in oils, as her colleagues claim, but rather by certain intrinsic properties of the water molecules involved.

For proof, Roke turns to the technologies in which she is an expert nonlinear optics and light diffusion. Using carefully filtered lasers channeled through a complex circuit of mirrors and lenses, she "hits" her sample barely a drop and measures the wavelength of the light that escapes from it. With this she can detect whether or not there are nanoscopic molecules on the interface between the oil and the water.

The precision of the observations "shows that negative charges exist even in a total absence of surface impurities, and thus the explanation put forward by my colleagues, which was derived from charge measurements and chemical titrations of the bulk liquids, doesn't hold up," says Roke. "We have developed a unique apparatus that can distinctly measure the interfacial structure of a layer on the sub-nanometer length scale that surrounds a droplet of oil in water. Thus, we can 'see' what is on the interface, and do not have to deduce it from comparing bulk properties, which is far less accurate."

Disproving a hypothesis isn't enough to explain a phenomenon, however. Roke is studying a promising avenue, that explores the intrinsic quantum nature of the water molecule itself, which might be responsible for the phenomenon. "The measurements we've made as part of this refutation could be used to try and prove this explanation," she says. "It's fascinating, because quantum effects (the smallest of the smallest) might be responsible for macroscopic charging effects that influence so many properties that relate to the functioning of the human body."

Gastric bypass surgery helps diabetes but doesn't cure it, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? After gastric bypass surgery, diabetes goes away for some people -- often even before they lose much weight. So does that mean gastric surgery "cures" diabetes? Not necessarily, according to the largest community-based study of long-term diabetes outcomes after bariatric surgery. For most people in the study, e-published in advance of print in Obesity Surgery, diabetes either never remitted after gastric surgery or relapsed within five years.

Among the two thirds of the study's patients whose diabetes at first went away, more than a third re-developed diabetes again within five years after gastric surgery. After adding in the one quarter of patients whose diabetes never remitted after surgery, most (56 percent) of the study's patients had no long-lasting remission of their diabetes following gastric surgery. However, when diabetes did go away, the research team extrapolated, it stayed away for a median of eight years.

Which kinds of obese people with type 2 diabetes are likely to get the most benefit from gastric surgery? "Our results suggest that, after gastric surgery, diabetes stays away for longer in those people whose diabetes was less severe and at an earlier stage at the time of surgery," said principal investigator David E. Arterburn, MD, MPH, a general internist and associate investigator at Group Health Research Institute. "Gastric surgery isn't for everyone," he said. "But this evidence suggests that, once you have diabetes and are severely obese, you should strongly consider it, even though it doesn't seem to be a cure for most patients."

The multi-site study tracked 4,434 adults at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, and HealthPartners for 14 years: from 1995 to 2008. The research arms of all three of these integrated health care delivery systems -- and Group Health Research Institute, where the study's results were analyzed -- belong to the HMO Research Network. The patients had type 2 diabetes that was either controlled with medication or else uncontrolled, and they were also obese enough to be candidates for gastric bypass surgery.

"Diabetes is an increasingly common disease that tends to keep getting worse relentlessly," Dr. Arterburn said. More than 25 million American adults have diabetes -- and as populations age and keep gaining weight, 50 million are predicted to have it by 2050. Already, diabetes accounts for 5 percent of all U.S. health care spending. And it raises the risk of blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"Prevention is by far the best medicine for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Once you have diabetes, it's really hard to get rid of. Attempts to treat it with intensive lifestyle changes and medical management have been disappointing." For instance, the National Institutes of Health recently halted the Look AHEAD study of intensive lifestyle changes for people with diabetes. Despite improvements in risk factors like body weight, fitness, and blood pressure, sugar, and lipids, that study showed lifestyle changes did not lower the outcomes that matter most: heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.

"No wonder so many were excited to learn that diabetes can remit after gastric surgery -- even, in some cases, before any significant weight loss -- and many were hoping that gastric surgery might be a 'cure' for diabetes," Dr. Arterburn said. "Our study is the first major evidence that diabetes often recurs after gastric bypass surgery." Still, he added, even after diabetes comes back, having had a long period of post-surgery remission is likely to have many positive effects, such as fewer complications of diabetes: less damage to eyes and kidneys, and fewer heart attacks, strokes, and deaths. The researchers are now funded by the National Institutes of Health to study that possibility in this same population. Dr. Arterburn is also leading a randomized controlled pilot trial of intensive behavioral treatment vs. gastric surgery at Group Health with colleagues from the University of Washington.

It's still not clear whether diabetes relapse happens because of gaining weight back or because of underlying the progression of diabetes. But patients' weight -- before and after surgery -- was not strongly correlated with remission or relapse of diabetes in this population.

As part of the Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness (DEcIDE) program, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services funded this project under contract HHSA290-2005-0033-I-TO10-WA1, led by Dr. Arterburn.

Directors announced the appointment of Ms Kirstin Ferguson as a NonExecutive Director of DTE.

Kirstin is an experienced Non-Executive director sitting on a range of boards. If you have your own website or are planning to create one soon in the course of your research you will have read about the importance of publishing an ezine (electronic newsletter) as a way of generating traffic to your site.

Note to purists: yes I DO understand there is strictly speaking a difference between ezines and electronic newsletters but for our purposes it doesnt matter so dont write me.

Its good advice. By capturing the email addresses of your site visitors (via an ezine sign-up form at your site) you can develop a mailing list to put yourself before time and time again unless and until they ask to be removed. The idea is that by regularly sending your ezine to your list your site visitors get to know you and over time come to trust you as an expert in your field. Assuming you do competent work that is.

But ezine publishing can be a lot more than just a traffic generation tool a means to an end. It can be an end unto itself. Your ezine can actually be a business in its own right.

How can an ezine be a paying proposition in itself? There are two ways by accepting paid advertising and charging for subscription.

Advertising

When I started my ezine way back when in July 1999 I was just following conventional wisdom. I had created a web site by the same name and wanted to publish an ezine as a way of staying in touch with site visitors and reminding them to visit my site.

What ended up happening though is that the ezine became the central plank of my business and the website became secondary. Why? Well concord replica watch first of all I found that I actually enjoyed it. I enjoyed writing articles and I enjoyed the fact that other people actually got some benefit from my labors. But beyond that once I had amassed a subscriber database of 1 000 or so people started asking me what my advertising rates were. I didnt have any. Paid Subscriptions

Just as ezine advertising has slowed down paid subscription ezines are emerging as the next hot trend. More and more the concept of free content on the Internet is giving way to user pays and ezine publishing is no exception with ezine publishers beginning to charge for subscription to their ezines in lieu of (or in addition to) running paid ads.

For those who (for some reason) believe that everything on the Internet should be free (as long as theyre not the ones who have to do the work for nothing of course) this is on a superficial level probably bad news. But on the other hand when someone is paying for content it had better be worth it. So the upside is that subscribers to paid ezines are more likely to be getting (and will demand) better quality content than they are used to from the typical free ezine. In other words you get what you pay for.

So what does all this mean for you the would-be Internet entrepreneur? Quite simply if youre an expert in anything (and we all are) you can turn that knowledge into the foundation of an online business by publishing an ezine on that subject including your own original articles on a regular basis (dont bother just regurgitating someone elses if youre publishing them so are others and the object of the exericse is to make an original contribution) and either accepting paid advertising or charging subscribers a subscription fee.

Pint-Sized Punch: Ford Fiesta ST Will Come to U.S.

Hot hatchbacks have long been the perfect compromise for many car enthusiasts, embodying a holy trinity of performance, value, and utility. But while Europeans enjoy a deluge in this segment year after year, Americans have been left to pick between just a few practical pint-sized powerhouses like the Volkswagen GTI. But recently a flood of newcomers have invaded our shores, including the Hyundai Veloster Turbo, the Fiat 500 Abarth, and Ford Focus ST.

Now entering this small but growing group of compact performance is another Ford, the 2014 Fiesta ST. While less powerful than its big brother, the Focus ST, this smaller five-door hatch will use a "high-output variant" of the turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost inline-four found in the ordinary 2013 Ford Fusion and the Euro-spec Fiesta ST, but with output increased to a reported 197 hp and 214 lb. ft. of torque?available at just 3500 rpm. The increased punch is married to a six-speed manual; Ford says it will get 34 mpg.

In addition to more power, the Fiesta ST will receive suspension improvements over the stock model including a stiffer rear axle, new steering knuckles to sharpen the steering ratio from 14.3-1 down to 13.6-1, and bigger disc brakes with four-wheel ABS (the stock Fiesta comes with disc brakes on the front only). There's also electronic Torque Vectoring Control to reduce the understeer which plagues front-wheel drive cars and three-mode electronic stability control.

With an added rear-spoiler, front splitter, and improved rear diffuser, the Fiesta ST looks like it?ll stay planted once the driving gets spirited, and the Sound Symposer will pipe in engine roar to remind you things are getting hot and heavy. No official price has been announced yet, but expect the Fiesta ST to retail somewhere slightly north of $20,000 when it goes on sale later next year.

Justin Bieber's not letting his rocky romance with Selena Gomez stop him from staying focused on one thing: giving fans some shirtless Bieber fever!

The "Boyfriend" crooner doffed his shirt for a revealing pic that he proudly posted on Twitter, showing off the results of his workout regimen.?

"Back in the gym," he tweeted Friday, dropping his overalls to reveal his cut torso, boxer briefs and signature tats.

Biebs' gym trip seemed to have gone well, because he later wrote, "good workout. #focused."

He certainly had reason to stay focused: It was an eventful weekend in Bieber Land over the weekend.

Are Justin and Selena on the road to reconciliation?

On Friday, he met with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to receive the Diamond Jubilee Medal on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, which recognized Canadians' "significant contributions and achievements."

His choice of attire, however, raised more than a few eyebrows after Biebs showed up in overalls, a plain white shirt and a baseball cap. Talk about keeping it real!?

And then on Sunday, the 18-year-old appeared in a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey that was taped before he and Gomez split up. In it, the Biebs swooned openly about his ladylove, singling out her "genuine" spirit.

"She's one of the most genuine people," the crooner shared. "She just has a good heart."

He also added, "I can talk to her about everything."

Looks like the two are at least trying to talk things out these days: They've been spotted together several times since E! News exclusively reported that that two had called it quits, hitting up an American Music Awards after-party and then, a few days later, grabbing dinner with friends at a Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles.?
