From Partners to Parents: Showing CARE | World of Psychology

From Partners to Parents: Showing CAREDiscussing and exploring the well-being of one?s partnership isn?t often on the list of baby preparation to-dos. After all, pregnancy can be a joyful time ? one that elicits feelings of anticipation, newness, and excitement. Immersed in the pregnant possibilities of motherhood, energy focuses on what will be gained by starting a family. Baby showers mark this time by gifting the family with the necessary gear to outwardly navigate and welcome this new life.

?Get a lot of sleep.? ?Go see a lot of movies.? ?Take a Babymoon.?

When advice is offered, it often centers around the notion that couples can prematurely fill up their well-being reservoirs, meeting needs that won?t be fulfilled for a while postpartum, as if these can be stored in the ?happiness? hump of marital satisfaction.

While these are all wonderful suggestions, highlighting the changes couples are about to experience, they ignore the emotional preparation that so often helps pave the way for the passage to parenthood.

During such an expansive time, couples rarely consider the more stressful ways their partnership may be affected once the baby arrives. Transitioning from being partners to becoming parents is an enormous identity change, and this is not always easy.

Surviving and adjusting to the early days of parenting exposes one?s relationship foundation at its very core. Once baby arrives, approximately two-thirds of couples report a change in the quality of their partnership. Between sleep deprivation, diaper changes, and feedings, the day-to-day routine of caring for a baby suddenly revolves around negotiating. When this is not discussed in advance, it can quickly turn into ?keeping score? of who?s doing what and who?s doing more. With less time for adult conversation, date nights, and self-care, emotional distance can develop.

So how can partners emotionally prepare for the baby?s arrival?

To help couples connect and communicate, I developed the acronym CARE. CARE highlights concrete topics for couples to discuss and explore before the baby arrives. By engaging in a thoughtful discussion, couples can build awareness around relationship self-care and well-being, and in doing so support each other in the new days of parenting. Examples for each part of the acronym are given below:

?After our daughter was born, and once my husband returned to work, it was hard to find time to talk and connect, just the two of us. I missed our partnership as a twosome and felt really lonely being in ?baby world? all day long.?

C: Communication. Once baby arrives, finding time to talk and connect is challenging. With a range of new emotions, some of which are difficult, setting boundaries around communication is helpful. For example, couples may agree not to address hard or hurtful feelings at midnight, or in between diaper changes. When discussing difficult topics, using ?I? statements is a simple, but effective way to share one?s feelings and instill empowerment around communicating them.

?Post-baby, we came home from the hospital, and felt this enormous sadness about how much our lives had changed. I missed having time to meet daily necessities like showering and eating with two hands. My husband missed downtime after work and on the weekends. The shock of being parents surprised us. We felt like we had to mourn our old lives in order to accept our new ones.?

A: Acceptance. Myriad transitions are under way during pregnancy and during the postpartum period. Welcoming the baby and adjusting to the ?new nest? often means acknowledging what has changed, accepting each moment just as it is, and realizing it is temporary. Sometimes, this means grieving what has been lost with regard to individual identity in order to make room for what has emerged.

?All of our family lives far away. In preparing for the baby, we had to think about who could help us with day-to-day errands and meal preparation. Our midwife gave us great advice and helped us connect with a postpartum doula and a food delivery service.?

R: Resources. In preparing for the early days with the baby, it is helpful to think of who will support you. It?s often a good idea to create a list or calendar of anticipated daily needs, as well as who might be available to help with those needs. Local hospitals and mothers groups often offer a range of new mom/parent support groups, classes, and even meal preparation services that can help ease the transition.

?In the new days, everyone asked us if we loved being parents and commented with questions posed as statements, ?isn?t it exciting? While it was exciting, it was also terrifying. I wish someone could have connected with us around the scary feelings.?

E: Empathy. While a shared journey, the evolution of parenthood may involve separate paths. Parents are sometimes on different emotional timelines as they navigate, integrate, and make meaning of their new identities. Having compassion and making room for any and all feelings that emerge helps couples join hands during this transition, and creates a strong emotional base for which to raise a child.

For any mother- or father-to-be, becoming a parent brings a tidal wave of unexpected feelings, normal insecurities, and new opportunities. Adjusting to this new identity offers the opportunity to deepen your relationship with your partner, internally expand and embrace the teachable moments of raising a child. Intimacy and connection can become richer as a result of this process. Often, it is making and taking time to talk about the hard things even when there is no perfect solution.

Couple's Friends Raise Thousands for Life-Saving Surgery

In the past year, Drew Lewis has proposed to his now-wife, celebrated his wedding day and received a life-changing diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer.

He's also realized the power of social media, the power of friends lending a helping hand and, in this holiday season, the power of giving thanks.

Lewis is scheduled to undergo surgery today just days after their healthcare provider dismissed their appeals to pay for the life saving procedure as well as an earlier surgery. His medical bills, he estimates, will be about $400,000.

But Lewis and his wife, Amy Blansit, 33, of Springfield, Mo., have been buoyed by an outpouring of financial and emotional support from family, friends and strangers who have sent the couple nearly $20,000 in the past week through a Facebook page and the charity website GiveFoward.com.

"It really is unbelievable what people are doing," Blansit told ABCNews.com.

Lewis, a 45-year-old real estate agent, was diagnosed with colon cancer in January after a colonoscopy revealed tumors throughout his body and cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes.

Through nine months of chemotherapy and two surgeries to remove the tumors, Lewis and his wife relied on each other and turned down the often-overwhelming offers of help from friends and family.

"We've had friends from the beginning who wanted to help - bring food, cut the lawn - anything that they can do to help," Blansit said. "We kept turning them away."

The couple, who are raising Lewis' two teenage children from a previous relationship, turned their friends away even as they received the devastating news that Lewis' insurance carrier would not pay for the surgeries to remove his tumors, treatments that doctors told him would stretch his life expectancy from one to two years to at least seven.

Lewis and Blansit got that news just hours before Lewis' second surgery in October but decided to forge ahead with that procedure, as well as a third and final operation - scheduled for today - at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

"We thought this is our only chance and if we have to downsize and change our lifestyle to make it happen then we will," Blansit said. "You can't really put a price tag on what you would do in this situation and what life means. There's really not a number for it."

The couple appealed the insurance decision but found out last week that their appeal had been denied. Lewis' insurance carrier, HealthLink, declined to cover the operations because they were classified as "experimental" and "exploratory," according to Blansit.

HealthLink said the decision not to pay for Lewis' surgeries was made by United Security Life and Health, which it said is Lewis' primary health provider. United Security Life and Health did not return requests for comment from ABCNews.com.

That same week, Lewis and Blansit's friends and family, without knowing the couple's insurance woes, stepped in to help.

"We kept turning them away and then at Thanksgiving they just ignored us," Blansit said.

The couple's friends and family decided to use the social media tools that Lewis had been using to keep them updated on his progress as a way to raise money for the couple, both of whom have been unable to work due to Lewis' treatment.

Lewis' co-workers began a fundraising drive at the couple's bank and shared the information on Lewis' Facebook page.

As Lewis' coworkers helped in Springfield, Blansit's sister and brother-in-law, thousands of miles away in Las Vegas, established the "Drew Lewis Colon Cancer Fund" on GiveForward.com.

In just one week, nearly $10,000 has been raised by Lewis' colleagues and another $9,000 has been collected on GivingForward.com.

"It's one of those things where we're so far away from everyone who is doing it. It's such a neat way to be connected," a grateful Blansit said.

It wasn't until the hospital bills began to arrive this week and their appeal was denied that they let their family and friends know that they were tackling Lewis' treatment without the aid of insurance.

"It's a hard thing to get to and to discuss because it also means that Drew is not able to provide for his family," said Blansit. "It comes to the point that Drew has to say he's sick and can't do it on his own. That was the point we got to. It's a hard place to be in life."

Even more than the financial aid, Blansit says the helping hands have been a beacon of hope for Lewis, with the messages left on Facebook and GivingForward.com motivating his recovery.

"Drew? For the past few years I've been making a $500 donation to a charity instead of having professionals come and put lights on my house for Christmas. This year, I am sharing this gift with you?" wrote one donor.

Blansit says she and Lewis have a mini-command center in his hospital room with a laptop, iPad and two iPhones set up to monitor the overwhelming response.

"We're kind of addicted to social media right now," she said. "We just had so many people who are drawn to Drew and who absolutely think the world of him that we couldn't keep up with our phones."

"It really changes his day to have that connectedness and see that he's changing lives through his process," Blansit said. "He says that's his therapy. That's his means to sometimes manage a day."

Romney, Obama lunch, agree to ?stay in touch.? Maybe.

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama (Pete Souza/official White House photo)

President Barack Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney met for lunch at the White House on Thursday, their first face-to-face meeting since the bitter election campaign in which each man basically warned voters that the other risked destroying the economy. A syrupy White House statement released after the meal said they had discussed America's global leadership role and agreed on their desire to stay in touch. Maybe.

Mitt Romney arrives at the White House for his lunch with President Barack Obama. (Jason Reed/Reuters)Romney arrived one minute early for the 12:30 p.m. lunch, walking into the West Wing through a side entrance a safe distance from the press. He walked out the same way at 1:43 p.m., even as Obama's press secretary Jay Carney gave only meager details of what he insisted was a "private" get-together between the president and his defeated Republican rival.

Romney "congratulated the president for the success of his campaign and wished him well over the coming four years," according to the White House account of the meal. "The focus of their discussion was on America's leadership in the world and the importance of maintaining that leadership position in the future.

"They pledged to stay in touch, particularly if opportunities to work together on shared interests arise in the future," the statement said.

The lunch menu included white turkey chili and Southwestern grilled chicken salad.

The White House barred reporters from the event, but released an official photo showing Obama giving Romney a tour of the Oval Office.

Carney, briefing reporters while the lunch was going on, predicted that the two men would compare experiences from the campaign trail. "There aren't that many people who have run, been nominees for their party. There aren't that many people you can talk to who know what it's like."

Obama is "very interested in some of Gov. Romney's ideas," Carney insisted. But, when pressed, he would highlight only the Republican's widely praised rescue of the Salt Lake City Olympics and say that Obama hoped to apply Romney's know-how to his own efforts to make government more efficient.

That's a skill set, not an idea, one reporter pointed out. So are there actually ideas of Romney's that the president always either supported or opposed in the campaign but is now rethinking?

"There were certainly things that the two men agreed on" during the campaign, Carney said. "I wouldn't say it was the majority of things. It wasn't."

Still, Carney pointed to the three presidential debates and underlined that the erstwhile rivals had frequently professed to agree with each other.

He's right. Here's a sample of some of those moments. Note that some of the "agreements" are tactical attempts to score political points rather than any sincere assertion of commonality of purpose.

From the first debate:

Obama:?"Gov. Romney and I both agree that our corporate tax rate is too high."
"I agree that the Democratic legislators in Massachusetts might have given some advice to Republicans in Congress about how to cooperate."

Romney:?"I agree, education is key, particularly the future of our economy."
"We agree; we ought to bring the tax rates down, and I do, both for corporations and for individuals."
"Let's come back to something the president (and) I agree on, which is the key task we have in health care is to get the costs down so it's more affordable for families."

Or this exchange:

Obama: "One of the things I suspect Gov. Romney and I probably agree on is getting businesses to work with community colleges so that they're setting up their training programs ..."

Moderator Jim Lehrer: "Do you agree, Governor?"

Obama: "Let?let?let me just finish the point."

Romney: "Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah."

Or this one:

Lehrer: "Can the two of you agree that the voters have a choice, a clear choice, between the two of you?"

Romney: "Absolutely."

Obama: "Yes."

Can life emerge on planets around cooling stars?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Astronomers find planets in strange places and wonder if they might support life. One such place would be in orbit around a white or brown dwarf. While neither is a star like the sun, both glow and so could be orbited by planets with the right ingredients for life.

No terrestrial, or Earth-like planets have yet been confirmed orbiting white or brown dwarfs, but there is no reason to assume they don't exist. However, new research by Rory Barnes of the University of Washington and Ren? Heller of Germany's Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam hints that planets orbiting white or brown dwarfs will prove poor candidates for life.

White dwarfs are the hot cores of dead stars and brown dwarfs are failed stars, objects not massive enough to start nuclear burning as the sun does. In theory, both can be bright enough to theoretically support a habitable zone -- that swath of space just right for an orbiting planet's surface water to be in liquid form, thus giving life a chance.

The inner edge of that just-right zone is where a planet starts to become a runaway greenhouse, such as Venus. That heating phenomenon removes the planet's surface water and all chance of life -- of habitability -- is forever lost.

White and brown dwarfs share a common characteristic that sets them apart from normal stars like the sun: They slowly cool and become less luminous over time. And as they cool, their habitable zones gradually shrink inward. Thus, a planet that is found in the center of the habitable zone today must previously have spent time near the zone's deadly inner edge.

Because of their past, such planet would "face a difficult path to habitability," Barnes said, even if they're discovered right in that habitable zone. Call it a sort of cosmic background check, revealing that the worlds probably lost the means to host life long before they became habitable zone residents.

"These planets, if we find them today in a current habitable zone, previously had to have gone through a phase which sterilized them forever," Barnes said. Heller added, "So, even if they are located in the habitable zone today, they are dead."

Barnes is the lead author of a paper published in November in the journal Astrobiology; and Heller is co-author.

Mathematics helps mobiles and tablets match eyes' ability to switch from sunshine to shadow

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Researchers have pushed the boundaries of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video to match our own eyes' ability to cope with the real world's ever rapidly changing light intensity -- such as sun simply going behind clouds. Now researchers at WMG at the University of Warwick, have found a way to compress and stream HDR video directly to monitors and mobile devices, such as an iPad, bringing enormous benefits to industries including gaming and security.

Researchers at WMG at the University of Warwick, working in partnership with spinout company goHDR Ltd, have succeeded in achieving and patenting a method of real-time encoding and remote display of High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Working with their Portuguese partner INESC Tec, they have also been able to demonstrate the technique in action on an iPad. This means that full HDR video content can now be encoded and streamed directly to remote displays, including mobile devices, or sent for storage back at home-base. Gaming will be transformed too, with HDR content being directly available for interactive online and cloud-based games.

HDR imagery delivers the wide range of light intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to details of dark shade. HDR video thus offers "True Brightness"; a significantly enhanced viewing experience. The amount of data required to capture all this extra detail, however, is huge, with high definition True Brightness footage generating the equivalent of a CD worth of data every second. goHDR has a patented algorithm that is capable of compressing HDR frames by at least 150:1 with minimal perceptual loss of quality. The partners have now developed a new method that enables uncompressed HDR frames to be encoded and streamed to a remote device in real-time. Encoding rates of over 60 frames per second (fps) have been achieved for 720p resolution on a modern 16-core computer.

Professor Alan Chalmers, Professor of Visualisation at WMG, University of Warwick and Founder and Innovation Director of goHDR, said: "This project has brought together worldwide expertise in HDR imaging from the University of Warwick and INESC Tec with the innovation and patented HDR video compression technology of goHDR. Together the partners have clearly demonstrated the technical feasibility of encoding and streaming HDR video content to mobile devices in real-time."

"Previously HDR video compression had to be done off-line. This meant the HDR video data from a camera had to be first stored on special high-speed disks, encoded and finally transmitted. This could take many minutes, precluding any live broadcasts. Real-time encoding now opens up many more opportunities for people to experience HDR content directly. For example:

  • In games, it allows full HDR game content to be delivered, even to a player of interactive games, from the cloud. Most video games are generated in HDR but until now, a data transmission bottleneck has prevented this extra realism from being delivered to the user.
  • In security, it enables surveillance cameras to deliver live HDR feeds, immediately providing all the details within a scene, even in extreme lighting conditions
  • In leisure, it allows streaming HDR content from a consumer camera, for example when snowboarding down a mountain, to your friends watching on their tablets back at home.

Professor Chalmers added: "Our work opens up the real-time delivery of HDR video to a wide range of devices. We expect in the future it will even be possible, with real-time encoding, to capture and stream HDR video from mobile devices."

Dr Maximino Bessa, lead researcher of the project at INESC Tec said: "Mobile devices are rapidly becoming the main means for viewing content and playing games. Delivering HDR video to a tablet brings about a step change in viewing experience for mobile devices."

Leafs coach Carlyle has sights fixed on Marlies

Report an error

TORONTO?-?

The NHL lockout was bad news for the surplus deer population on Manitoulin Island.

It enabled Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle to join the annual November hunt for four days, a time of year he?s usually holding a hockey stick at practice instead of a rifle.

?There were a few we got,? Carlyle said Wednesday at Ricoh Coliseum, where he and assistant coach Dave Farrish watched the Toronto Marlies practice. ?I?ve been hunting a few times. That?s the first (deer hunt) I?ve done in a long time. It was very enjoyable .

?The activity was more about the camaraderie and being out with friends and neighbours I had grown up with. (Carlyle has a summer cottage on the island.) It?s nice to be able to go, but nice to be able to come back here, too.?

Carlyle and his assistants were eagerly scrutinizing the Marlies? games and their workouts, but the farm team?s heavy road schedule this month gave the staff some down time. Now, with cautious optimism that there could yet be NHL hockey by December or January, Carlyle is going to be more of a fixture around Ricoh in coming weeks.

?We were all ready to go,? Carlyle lamented of the lockout derailing plans for his first training camp as Leafs coach. ?Now we try to have a presence here. If I?m not here, than Dave Farrish or Scott Gordon and Greg Cronin are going to be. Now that (the team is back) you?ll see a lot more of us. I might go on the road to Rochester for Friday?s game or watch a junior game.?

Farrish joined Carlyle in the stands on Wednesday, while new Leafs goaltending instructor Rick St. Croix was on the ice. The Marlies have three netminders ? Ben Scrivens, the injured Jussi Rynnas, and current back-up Mark Owuya. New skating coach Barb Underhill was also at centre ice in the lower bowl, watching the players while comparing computer video of the individuals? footwork.

Among the potential Leafs Carlyle is keeping tabs on is Scrivens, who could either back up James Reimer or challenge him as starter, if general manager Brian Burke does not land a veteran. Scrivens was the AHL?s best statistical goalie last year and while his numbers haven?t dipped too much, he certainly hasn?t stolen many games thus far.

The Marlies? record is 9-8-0-1 heading into three weekend games.

?Scrivens hasn?t returned to the form he had last year,? Carlyle said. ?But he?s a quality goaltender and you can see it in his work ethic and his approach. We have to continue to work with him to get him back to the way he?s capable of playing.?

Carlyle intends to make the Leafs tougher than predecessor Ron Wilson without sacrificing offence. To that end, he and Burke have to be ecstatic that winger Matt Frattin has come back from shoulder surgery with five goals in his first five games.

?He has worked very hard in his recovery and has a history of being an offensive player,? Carlyle said. ?It?s good to see he?s scoring here, but it?s been short term. The NHL is a different grind. The one thing he has to be up there is as consistent as he has been down here. That?s what our expectations are up top.

?He played that way in the AHL playoffs (10 goals, 13 points in 13 games) before he was hurt. He was a physical force on the ice and you noticed him out there in those key areas on the ice.?

Carlyle has also found few faults with defenceman Jake Gardiner?s game in the minors, pleased that he has been able to keep busy after a strong first year with the Leafs.

?He hasn?t changed anything,? Carlyle said. ?Certainly he?s bigger and stronger. He has fit right in here. He hasn?t sat around just waiting for the NHL to start. I?m sure there?s a lot of players in that mode who can?t wait for the NHL to start. But he?s not fazed by that (delay). He?s played very well here. It?s a good sign.?

Charged exec cooperating in W.Va. mine blast probe

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? An executive who ran several Massey Energy coal companies and worked closely with former CEO Don Blankenship faces criminal conspiracy charges and is cooperating with federal prosecutors, a sign that authorities may be targeting Blankenship himself in the fatal West Virginia blast that was the nation's worst mine disaster in four decades. ?

David Craig Hughart, president of a Massey subsidiary that controlled White Buck Coal Co., is named in a federal information document ? which signals a defendant is cooperating ? filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Beckley.

Although Upper Big Branch is never directly mentioned in the document, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin told The Associated Press the charges come from his team's continuing and wide-ranging investigation of the April 2010 explosion that killed 29 men at the southern West Virginia mine

Hughart is the highest-ranking official yet to be charged, and his cooperation suggests that federal officials are aiming their sights even higher in the former Massey leadership.?Massey was bought after the disaster by Virginia-based Alpha Natural Resources, which announced this past spring it was sealing the mine permanently.

The court document accuses Hughart of working with "known and unknown" co-conspirators to ensure that miners underground at White Buck and other, unidentified Massey-owned operations received advance warning about surprise federal inspections "on many occasions and various dates" between 2000 and March 2010.

Those illegal warnings gave workers time to conceal violations that could have led to citations, fines and costly production shutdowns, the document says.

Four investigations have concluded that Massey systematically covered up problems at the mine through an elaborate scheme that included sanitized safety-inspection books and an advance-warning system.

The United Mine Workers of America, which accused Massey of "industrial homicide," has demanded prosecution of at least 18 Massey managers, including Blankenship.

Hughart could be the link prosecutors need to go up the Massey food chain.

He's been president of at least 10 Massey subsidiaries throughout his career, positions that would have required the consent of a CEO whose micromanagement is well documented. At Big Branch, for example, Blankenship demanded production reports every 30 minutes.

Investigators say that at other Massey mines, Hughart colluded with others to violate laws requiring adequate ventilation, the removal of explosive coal dust and the application of pulverized limestone to prevent explosions.

Hughart has agreed to plead guilty to two charges: felony conspiracy to defraud the federal government by impeding the actions of MSHA, and misdemeanor conspiracy to violate mandatory health and safety standards. The felony charge carries a possible sentence of five years in prison, Goodwin said. The misdemeanor carries up to one year.

Goodwin said his investigation is continuing, "and it's clear from the information that there are co-conspirators, both known and unknown to us."

He wouldn't say who else might be charged or when. His investigators are "trying to push forward as quickly as we can," Goodwin said, but he said that developing the necessary evidence means obtaining the cooperation of people like Hughart.

Hughart is the third person to face serious criminal charges in the mine-blast investigation.

Former Upper Big Branch superintendent Gary May is also cooperating with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge for his actions at the mine and is set to be sentenced in January.

Former Massey security chief Hughie Elbert Stover, meanwhile, is appealing his conviction last fall on charges he lied to investigators and ordered a subordinate to destroy documents. He was sentenced to three years behind bars ? one of the stiffest punishments ever handed down in a mine safety case ? but has been free pending appeal.? Witnesses testified that Stover instructed mine guards to send radio alerts whenever inspectors entered the property. He's denied any wrongdoing.

The explosion at Upper Big Branch was sparked by worn teeth on a cutting machine, and fueled by methane and coal dust. It was allowed to propagate by clogged and broken water sprayers. The force of the blast traveled miles of underground corridors, rounding corners and doubling back on itself to kill men instantly.

Goodwin's office negotiated a $210 million agreement with Alpha to settle past violations at UBB and other Massey mines, protecting the company from criminal prosecution.

But individuals such as Hughart ? and perhaps Blankenship ? remain on the hook.?

A memo suggesting Blankenship regularly ordered underlings to put profits before safety emerged during a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the widows of two men killed in a 2006 fire at Massey's Aracoma Coal Alma No. 1 mine.

The memo told workers that if their bosses asked them to build roof supports or perform similar safety-related tasks, "ignore them and run coal."

"This memo is necessary only because we seem not to understand that the coal pays the bills," it said.

Massey settled that lawsuit for undisclosed terms, and Aracoma paid $4.2 million in civil and criminal penalties.

Public records suggest Hughart worked closely for at least 15 years with Blankenship, who retired about eight months after the disaster.

Blankenship dropped out of public view for a while but has been resurfacing. Last month, he donated $300,000 to the Marshall University medical school, and he's been posting his thoughts on politics and other matters on a website where he labels himself an "American competitionist."

In 1998, Hughart founded Big Sandy Venture Capital Corp., listing himself and Blankenship as co-directors, according to records on file with the Secretary of State's Office. In 2009, that company was absorbed by Massey's Green Valley Coal Co., with Hughart serving as president.

Hughart has also been president of Massey's Mammoth Coal, Peerless Eagle, Jacks Branch Coal, Kanawha Energy, Majestic Mining, Alex Energy, Nicco Corp and Elk Run Coal subsidiaries.

The United Mine Workers of America sued him in 1981 for alleged civil rights violations that involved repeatedly threatening, harassing and assaulting workers at the construction of a coal-preparation plant.

Federal court records show the case was settled in 1986 before going to trial.

Hawaii is the most expensive state for home buyers

7 hrs.

HONOLULU --?A real estate company says the average four-bedroom, two-bathroom home is more expensive in Hawaii than any other state in the nation.

Coldwell Banker said Wednesday says the average listing for a house that size is more than $742,000 in Hawaii. That's well above Massachusetts, which ranked second with an average listing price just over $489,000.

The company's U.S. Home Listing Report analyzes the average listing price of four-bedroom, two-bathroom properties on coldwellbanker.com between January 2012 and June 2012.

Nebraska has the cheapest listings at about $145,000. Iowa and Georgia are the second and third most affordable states to buy a home.

Los Altos, Calif., in Silicon Valley has the priciest listings of any community in the nation, with an average of $1.7 million.?

Incentives to philanthropic activity ? Professionally Speaking TV

Ellis Orlan, BA, CPA (IL), CGMA, SF Partnership LLP, Toronto, ON, CYBF Mentor, eorlan@sfgroup.ca What is it about giving of time or money to charity that appeals to some and not to others??Why are some people so over the top in terms of their charitable endeavors while others are like Ebenezer Scrooge? Well, in my opinion it likely starts early on in life with good parents who instill the core value in their children that we give from the abundance of what we have to those who are less fortunate. These parents model this behavior and demonstrate to their children that giving of time and money is not only a good thing but it is a minimum acceptable standard for living. We know that there are tax incentives for the wealthy that make giving of money easier and more palatable and we know there are fringe benefits for ?networkers? who find opportunities to give of their time because of people that they meet and opportunities that arise from same. We also know that many people give to a certain charity because of an experience with the cause. I have a friend who is very active at the ALS Society of Canada because they lost someone very close to them to that horrible disease.?Still others get involved financially and personally with a specific charity for absolutely no specific reason at all; they just knew they wanted to be involved in charitable giving and when something came to them that made sense, they participated. Finally to circle back to what I was saying earlier, about the main reason why I believe some people are involved and so generous with their time and money while others sit on the side lines, is because they have good parents and role models.?I know of many families that make the holiday season their time for giving back as a family unit.?From taking part in the funding, preparing and delivering of holiday gift baskets for the poor, to serving a holiday meal; giving remains the reason for the season and I for one am thankful for parents who taught me this principle at an early age.

3 Tips on Self-Love & Relationship Readiness

By?J. Cameron Gantt

When it comes to?love?and?relationships, the fabulous Earth Kitt once said ?It?s all about falling in love with yourself and sharing that love with someone who appreciates you, rather than looking for love to compensate for a self-love deficit.?

These are some of the things that keep many singles on what I like to call a ?hamster wheel? of bad relationships and it all stems from not being comfortable in your own skin. We all crave companionship in some form and we all deserve to a shot at finding love but the truth is, until you can master the art of?loving yourself, you will never be able to love or accept love from anyone else.

Luckily, it?s never too late to start nurturing the relationship you have with yourself and it?s never too late to start using that energy to attract a healthy, authentic and fulfilling relationship with someone else.

Be Honest
If you can?t be honest with yourself, how can you be honest with others? Honesty is important for any genuine relationship, especially the one we have with ourselves. Sometimes, I think that we forget to separate the fantasy of what we want from the reality of what we need. As a result, we find ourselves lost, confused and sometimes desperate looking for a way out. This is the point where people usually find themselves stuck because instead of focusing on the root of the problem, they are focusing on the quick fix.

The truth can be scary, but you have to take the good with the bad and own it. If it?s a positive truth, then live by it. If it?s a negative truth, then you have the option of either working towards changing it or working towards accepting it.

This honesty will bring you clarity within yourself and will also allow you to be more honest and clear about what you need in a relationship.

Stop, Look and Listen!
Pay attention to your actions and reactions. It easy for us to get distracted with responsibilities and find ourselves stuck on autopilot. A lot of times, I find that people get caught up taking on responsibilities and emotions that really serve them no purpose. It?s wasted energy.

Everything you do should serve your purpose. If you find yourself in a place where you feel like you are just going through the motions, take a time out to stop and reevaluate things. No matter how big or small the task at hand or how major or minor the info you are receiving, ask yourself: How will my actions or reaction to this situation serve my purpose?

Eliminate The Negative Self-Talk
We all have our good days and bad days and sometimes, insecurities can get the better of us. It would be unrealistic to say that you should never have a bad day ever. It just doesn?t work that way and anyone who says that they are 100% confident all the time has a good poker face.

A lot of confidence issues stem from comparisons we make between ourselves and the lives of those we know. Those comparisons are reinforced with negative self-talk and that talk is what tricks us into thinking that we are not good enough.

When you find yourself lost in a sea of negative self-talk, just replace it with positive talk. Look at your accomplishments, big or small, and celebrate them. If something is really bothering you, transform that bad juju into productive energy and get to work on changing that situation.

When you do get into a relationship, you will be better equipped to?love?that person, flaws and all.

St. Joe's football shut out in W. Mass. D-III semis by Belchertown

HOLYOKE -- When opportunity knocks in a playoff game, it would behoove a team to take advantage.

St. Joseph's had an opportunity to make a statement when the Crusaders recovered a fumbled punt on the Belchertown 16-yard line late in the first quarter. By not scoring, the statement the Crusaders made was not a good one.

Belchertown answered with 14 points in the second quarter and 12 more in the third as the top-seeded Orioles roughed up St. Joe's 26-0 Tuesday night at Holyoke High School's Roberts Stadium.

"That kind of deflated us. We were sure we were going to go in and score," said Crusader quarterback Jon Bianchi.

The Intercounty League champions will play Mount Greylock in Saturday's Division III Super Bowl.

The game started badly for the Crusaders. After winning the toss and taking the ball, St. Joe's fullback Lavante Wiggins injured an ankle on the first play from scrimmage, carrying the ball for three yards.

"It was deflating enough losing Lavante on the first play," said the quarterback. "There's not much you can do."

The problem with losing Wiggins was two-fold. First, it takes a 1,000-yard rusher out of the lineup. Two, according to Crusaders coach Gary Bianchi, it forced the St. Joseph's staff to adjust its offense on the fly.

"He was going to carry the ball more than he's carried it all year," said the St. Joe's coach. "When he goes down, it changes the whole game plan. There's no threat in the middle of the

field. There's no threat coming at you."

Bianchi led the Crusaders with 64 yards rushing on 11 carries. St. Joe's also lost Tank Roberson, Colby St. John and backup fullback Dylan Kerr to injury.

The teams traded punts and then the Crusaders went three-and-out. Bianchi's punt of 40 yards was fumbled by Nick Leduc and recovered by Roberson at the Belchertown 16. The Crusaders stalled and lost a fumble on fourth down.

"It wasn't good," Gary Bianchi said. "Right after there, it went bad."

But it was all good for a Belchertown team.

"They were moving the ball better than we were in the first quarter," Belchertown coach John Mayo said. "It was huge. I think they had four downs inside the [20]. It was absolutely huge. We were already thinking they were probably going to put up a score."

A good special teams play for Belchertown led to the first touchdown. Bianchi's punt was blocked and recovered at the Crusader 32-yard line with 4:39 left in the second quarter. Six plays later, Leduc ran the ball in from four yards out. The Belchertown quarterback had the key play of the drive -- and maybe the game -- when he hit a fourth-and-6 pass to Jake Mastorakis for 23 yards and a huge fourth down. The two-point conversion made it 8-0.

The Orioles took command on the next series when linebacker Tony Pellerin picked off a Bianchi pass and ran it back for a 45-yard touchdown. The conversion failed, but it was 14-0.

At halftime, the Crusaders outgained the Orioles 93 to 30 yards, but had nothing to show for it.

Belchertown took the third-quarter kickoff and went 48 yards on five plays for a touchdown. Belchertown ran off 17 plays to five for St. Joe's, scoring twice and putting this game out of reach. James Ryan led Belchertown with 93 yards on 20 carries.

"We were not 26 points better than St. Joe's. We were not," said Mayo. "We got some fortunate breaks. We jumped on them."

Hill's clutch shot pushes Pacers past Lakers 79-77

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? George Hill's high-arching shot over Dwight Howard went in with 0.1 seconds left, and the Indiana Pacers withstood Kobe Bryant's 40-point performance and the Lakers' last-minute rally for a 79-77 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Hill scored 19 points and hit that enormous clutch shot for the Pacers, who won their third straight road game over the Lakers after losing 11 consecutive regular-season games since Staples Center opened in 1999.

The Pacers' sturdy defense stifled the Lakers' up-tempo offense for most of the night, turning the game into an ugly grind before the thrilling finish.

Bryant hit a tying 3-pointer with 24.5 seconds left and produced the 114th 40-point game of his career despite playing with an apparent case of the flu for the Lakers, who dropped to 2-3 under new coach Mike D'Antoni.

David West scored 16 points and Paul George had 12 in the opener of Indiana's four-game road trip.

The Lakers flirted with the lowest-scoring game and worst shooting percentage in franchise history before scoring eight straight points in the waning minutes, tying it at 74 on Howard's dunk with 1:56 to play. After West made one free throw, Howard and Metta World Peace combined to miss four straight free throws, dropping Los Angeles' performance at the line to 23 for 43.

After Hill made a running shot, Bryant hit a 3-pointer in front of the Lakers' bench to tie it.

The Pacers wound down the clock for Hill, who beat Pau Gasol off the dribble and arched his shot over the leaping Howard, who blocked four shots and scored 17 points despite 3-of-12 shooting at the free throw line.

Before outscoring the rest of his team combined, Bryant missed the Lakers' morning shootaround when he fell ill. He spent the day in bed, drinking fluids and listening to Bob Marley, before giving another high-scoring performance, albeit with 10 turnovers and 12-for-28 shooting.

The Lakers returned from a three-game trip for a three-game homestand, their final multigame stretch at home before Christmas. After playing six games in a nine-day stretch earlier this month, the Lakers are clearly running near empty ? and they had little to give in the first half against Indiana.

The Pacers jumped to an early lead and hung on to it despite falling into a 1-for-23 shooting slump in the first half, playing more than 12 minutes with just one field goal. The Lakers couldn't take advantage, missing 14 of their 18 shots in the second quarter and repeatedly failing to move the ball at D'Antoni's preferred pace.

Bryant made five of his first six shots, emulating his many strong performances with the flu, but fell into a 1-for-10 slump before getting rolling again late in the third quarter while Los Angeles made a 13-2 run. Bryant had nine turnovers in the first three quarters, but also had 29 points ? more than his teammates' combined 28.

NOTES: The Pacers stay in California to face Sacramento and Golden State before stopping in Chicago on the way home from their trip. ... The Lakers handed out bobblehead dolls in the likeness of the late Chick Hearn, their beloved broadcaster who would have turned 96 on Tuesday. ... Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Kaley Cuoco, Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed and Tenacious D band members Jack Black and Kyle Gass watched from courtside.

Jeff Zucker To CNN: Former NBCUniversal Chief Will Reportedly Lead Network

By Peter Lauria and Lisa Richwine

Nov 27 (Reuters) - Jeff Zucker, a former head of NBCUniversal and the producer of Katie Couric's talk show, will be named president of Time Warner Inc's ratings-starved CNN cable news channel, a source close to the situation said on Tuesday.

Zucker will succeed departing CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton, who said in July he was leaving the once-dominant news network after nine years in the job amid a recent ratings slump.

The appointment of Zucker as the new president of CNN Worldwide will be announced by the end of next week, the source said. Zucker could not immediately be reached on Tuesday. A Time Warner spokesman had no comment.

Zucker gained a reputation as a news-producing whiz when he worked with Couric on NBC's "Today" show.

Now he will face the challenge of turning around CNN, the channel that pioneered around-the-clock cable news coverage when it was launched in 1980 by founder Ted Turner, but then saw its primetime ratings hit a 21-year low in this year's second quarter.

Since its beginnings, CNN has tried to hold the middle ground in its news coverage, a position that some blame for its ratings erosion. As CNN's viewership declined, ratings increased for rivals Fox News and MSNBC, which blend news with opinion and political commentary.

CNN "is a very large stage, and a lot needs to be done to fix it," the source told Reuters. Zucker "has been itching to get back in the game, and this is the best opportunity out there for him."

News Corp owns Fox, while MSNBC is now owned by cable giant Comcast Corp after its purchase of NBC two years ago that led to Zucker's ouster from NBCUniversal. The opinion programs on No. 1 cable news network Fox News skew conservative, while commentaries on MSNBC lean liberal.

Some industry experts argue that CNN needs to move out of the middle to regain lost ground.

"You never want to be stuck between two strong competitors, as they will divide the market and starve you out," said Adam Armbruster, a media industry consultant with Eckstein, Summers, Armbruster & Co.

Zucker "needs to bring his trademark 'star power' to the network and make them relevant and create regular viewers even when no big news story is breaking," Armbruster said.

CNN has lagged Fox News Channel and MSNBC in primetime viewers for more than a year. On a normal news night, CNN draws fewer than 1 million U.S. viewers in prime time, compared to about 2.7 million for Fox News Channel and about 1.5 million viewers for MSNBC, according to ratings data.

IDENTITY ISSUES

Though CNN remains profitable, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes said in August he was unsatisfied with CNN's low ratings and would seek to turn around the network with programming that was more compelling but remained non-partisan.

The network has struggled to find a programming identity in recent years, but not for lack of trying. It paired former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer with pundit Kathleen Parker for a talk show that failed miserably. It released perhaps its most notable personality in Larry King after more than two decades and replaced him with Piers Morgan. More recently, the network created a primetime show for its most youth-oriented host, Anderson Cooper, and enlisted popular chef Anthony Bourdain for a travel and food-related show.

CNN claimed a cable news ratings victory on the night of the U.S. presidential election in November. The network said it attracted 8.8 million total viewers, beating Fox News Channel by about 1 million.

CNN does have one advantage over its cable news competitors in that it attracts a much bigger digital audience. In October, CNN boasted 68 million unique online visitors. That topped the 56 million for NBC News Digital and the 35 million for the Fox News Digital Network, according to CNN.

As president, Zucker, who famously said that networks can't trade analog dollars for digital dimes, can attempt to upstream CNN's digital audience to the network and leverage its web reach for both ratings and financial gain.

RESPECTED NEWSMAN

During Zucker's tenure at NBC, he was intimately involved in the decision to move MSNBC hard left to counter Fox News, though that does not mean he will move CNN to the left, the source close to the situation said.

He also remained involved in decisions about programming and strategic direction of NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC after he was named CEO of NBCUniversal, said the source.

While Zucker's news chops have never been questioned, his tenure at NBC is often defined by the network's failures in primetime, as his rise to CEO coincided with NBC's fall from its top spot on the ratings perch. It has resided in the primetime ratings basement among the big four TV networks for the better part of a decade. This year, however, NBC has experienced a bit of a resurgence in primetime and ranks first once again among viewers 18-49 years old.

Zucker was known for having little patience or interest in Hollywood or the delicate personalities that inhabit it, as evidenced by his handling of the Jay Leno-Conan O'Brien late night switch, in which he threatened to "ice," or prevent O'Brien from working, for two years at one point during the standoff. He had a similarly unsentimental approach with executives, firing NBC Entertainment boss Kevin Reilly unexpectedly to bring in Ben Silverman, only to fire Silverman two years later.

But Zucker's reputation in the news business should help him attract strong talent to CNN, said one former industry executive who has worked with Zucker. "He has so much credibility in the news space. News people will want to work for him," the source said.

Pulling all the stops: the old parlor organ | The Islander

A PUMP ORGAN like those that were found in parlors of homes in the late 1800?s is currently on display at the Syracuse Museum. Photo by Sue Warren/The Islander

BY SUE WARREN
Islander Columnist

SYRACUSE ? It?s winter 1883 and a cold, early evening in Syracuse.

Walking along the road if you listen carefully, your ear can make out the faint strains of organ music. It must be that new parlor organ the family in the corner house just had shipped across the country by train.

Once the railroad linked the country in 1869, and families started having more disposable income as life became a bit easier, luxuries like fancy parlor furniture sets and pump organs started making their way by rail into homes on the prairies and the far west.

What would have been unthinkable just 25 years earlier when Conestoga wagons and handcarts brought pioneers and their meager possessions across the plains, was now a common reality.
Not surprisingly, among a people who cherished singing and music, musical instruments, both small and large, became almost necessities for an up and coming family. Musical entertainment was paramount and young ladies were encouraged, whenever possible, to learn to play an instrument as part of their education.

In the days before electricity, a foot-powered pump organ, which replaced the earlier melodeon, was a popular choice for music lessons.

The Syracuse Museum and Cultural Center has just such a pump organ as a centerpiece in its parlor exhibit area. This organ, made by the J. Estey Organ Co. of Brattleboro, VT. is a beauty.

Founded by Jacob Estey when he bought out a local manufacturing business in 1852, his company went on to become the largest manufacturer of organs in the United States.

Also known as reed or pump organs, close to a half million had been made by 1955 and sold around the world.

The museum?s organ has a mahogany veneer and carved decorations. Two foot pedals, slowly pumped alternately and continuously, filled a system of bellows with air and forced the air through shaved wood (and later, tuned metal) reeds, which produced the music.

Our model has eight push-pull stops just above the keyboard which can be selectively set to create different musical effects, depending on the piece being played.

If the Viola or Violetta stops were pulled, or opened, the organ could be set to sound like violins of different pitches, the viola being lower in sound and more mellow.

The Diapason or principal stop is necessary to help make the organ sound have the swelling impact of a large church organ.

As a nod to the past, the Melodia stop recreates the sound of the melodeon, a favorite early bellows instrument and smaller forerunner of the pump organ, in the pre-Civil War era.

If the organist used the Forte stop, then the sound became more powerful and louder, very useful for a grand flourish. Creating a reed instrument sound, the Flute stop is pretty self-explanatory and one of the more successful sound imitations on the organ.

Then there are two stops in the Vox, or voice, category. The Vox Jubilante is just what its name implies: it offers the organist a way to create a brilliant, joyful edge to the music. The Vox Demana remains a mystery as to what sound it produces.

The variety of stops are not limited to the eight on the Estey Organ. In fact, on larger church and concert hall organs there may be hundreds of choices ranging from tubas and cornets to harps to cymbals and drums and everything in between. Truly, some organs contain entire orchestras within.

The organ is silent now, but I?m sure if it could speak again, it would have tales to tell of the glorious music it once produced and the countless hours of enjoyment it provided for a pioneer family.

The Syracuse Museum and Cultural Center?s hours are Tuesdays -Thursdays from 2?5 p.m. and by appointment by calling 801-825-3633.

The museum is located at 1700 South (Antelope Drive) just before 2000 West, Syracuse.

Google adds Drive integration to new Gmail composer, ups attachment limit to 10 gigs

Google adds Drive integration to popup composer, ups attachment limit to 10 gigs

If you've used Gmail to send attachments, chances are you've hit that 25MB limit once or twice. Beginning today, Google is rolling out a new Drive integration feature, letting you insert files that you already have in the cloud, effectively boosting the limit 400 fold to 10 gigs. The feature isn't available to everyone just yet, but if you're using the new composer tool and see the Drive logo in the bottom toolbar, you should be good to go. Simply click the icon and choose your file -- if the intended recipient doesn't already have access, you'll be prompted to give them the nod. And, because the file is already stored in the cloud, any changes you make after the message goes out will be visible to your recipient, effectively letting you tweak that presentation or term paper after the submission deadline has passed. You'll find the full scoop at the source link below.

Astronaut to spend a year in orbit

Astronaut Scott Kelly will become the first U.S. astronaut to spend a year in space. Why? He is volunteering to be a human guinea pig -- to help NASA collect detailed medical and psychological data about the effects of long term spaceflight on a human. He and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko are scheduled to launch to the International Space Station in 2015 and return to Earth in 2016.

He was on the space station when his twin brother Mark was struggling to deal with the trauma of his wife's shooting. Mark Kelly, now retired from the astronaut corps, is a married to former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords ? and Scott could only offer long distance support to his twin brother when his wife was shot during in January 2011.

Jared Loughner has now pleaded guilty to 19 federal charges in the mass shooting that killed six and injured 13, including Giffords, who was hosting a congressional event that day.

Scott Kelly wished he could have done more to help. That is one of the drawbacks of a long term mission -- there is no easy way home if something happens to a loved one on Earth.

Click Here for Pictures: Images From the Final Frontier

Kelly clearly understands the risks -- and the rewards -- of long-duration space flight. He is, after all, a Navy fighter pilot, used to assignments overseas. He told ABC News in an interview before his last mission to the space station that his research was important to the future of space travel.

Scott Kelly "We need to learn how people can live and work in space for long periods of time, also how the equipment can survive and operate for long periods," he said. "If we are ever going to send people to live on the Moon, we are three days away, or to live on Mars where you are potentially 18 months away, we need to have some very robust systems to allow them to survive there. And the only place you can learn how to build and operate those systems is on the space station."

We already know many of the risks -- NASA has documented the damage to the eyesight of seven astronauts after they returned from spending months in space. Their flight surgeons have gone on record discussing bone density loss, decreased muscle mass, and the psychological isolation.

Why would anyone volunteer for this? The International Space Station is after all, is the only game in town if you are an astronaut and a mission to the dark side to the moon, while a popular topic, isn't funded yet, and Mars? Still decades away.

When will the U.S. space program get back into flying NASA astronauts into space? Hopefully by 2017. Several companies are working to build and certify human rated spacecraft to take crew, and cargo to the International Space Station.

While NASA touts the medical research accumulated from a year in space, the reality is that this also frees up a couple of seats on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft to sell to tourists.

When the U.S. space shuttles quit flying last year, they created a conundrum for companies like Space Adventures, whose business -- sending rich tourists into space -- depended upon the resources of Roscosmos, the Russian Space Agency. Roscosmos is the only space agency willing to send tourists to space (NASA won't do it, and now they don't have a spacecraft anyway so it's a moot point). Singer Sarah Brightman announced she is buying one of the seats -- and then launched a concert tour, so time will tell if she is really serious about training for a flight.

Kelly is an experienced astronaut -- he served as pilot on space shuttle mission STS-103 in 1999, commanded STS-118 in 2007, was flight engineer on the International Space Station Expedition 25 in 2010 and commander of Expedition 26 in 2011.

Kelly has logged more than 180 days in space, and a yearlong mission this would bring his total to almost 550 days. Impressive numbers, but the record will still belong to Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, who, over six missions, spent 803 days, 9 hours and 39 minutes of his life in space.
