American University of Ras Al Khaimah hosts International - AME Info

Details of the conference, the first of its kind to be held in the Arab world, were given by Prof. Dr. Hassan Al Alkim, Vice Chancellor of American University of Ras Al Khaimah and Dr. Asma Al Ketbi, President of Emirates Geographic al Society, at a Press Conference today.

Dr. Al Alkim congratulated the UAE Government and the people on the occasion of the 41st National Day celebrations and said the conference was an extension of celebrating UAE's achievements with a focus on scientific research, as the country has always offered support to science and scientists in various academic and professional fields by hosting important global conferences.

Dr Al Alkim hoped that the conference at the American University of RAK would foster greater interaction and exchange of experiences between geographers and geologists and added that the area of Ras Al Khaimah has been witness to many geological events dating back to hundreds of millions of years.

He thanked the Emirates Geographical Society for selecting the American University of Ras Al Khaimah to hold this conference.

Dr. Asma Mohammed Al Ketbi, President of the Society and professor in the Department of Geography at the University, spoke about the Society's role in promoting scientific aspects of geographical areas.

She said, "Emirates Geographical Society was proud to host for the first time in the Arab world, 'the Fourth World Conference on Alluvial Fans - 2012' which coincides with the UAE National Day celebrations."

Dr. Ketbi said, "The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah was the perfect choice for organising the conference because it is located at the foot of Wadi Al-Bih, which is packed with fans."

She said, "The week-long conference will examine the issues relating to sediments, geology, 'tectonic' hydrology and engineering."

The conference programme includes organizing field visits to alluvial fans in the UAE where visitors can see sand dunes and floods of fans coming from the mountains of Oman.

The Emirates Geographical Society has received many research papers from around the world. The organization is collaborating with scientists and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah in the organization of the conference, attended by a small group of scientists who specialize in the field of alluvial fans.

The conferences on Alluvial Fans was first held in the United States in 1995, followed by Spain in 2003 and Alberta, Canada. This conference aims to foster greater interaction between geologists from around the world, especially in the area of sediments, and reflects the importance of geological surface and subsurface in the UAE, positioning the university at a point of confluence of international researchers in the science of sediments.

The conference will address a variety of topics related to climate change and industrial applications of the science of sediment. It is worth mentioning that the World Organization for Sediment Scientists founded in 1952 aims to boost knowledge of sediments globally.
