Super young SuperPAC spending millions on election

Spinners and Winners

What would you do if you were a college student who suddenly came into millions of dollars?

Founding a Super PAC may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but that's exactly what John Ramsey did when his grandfather died, leaving him with a generous inheritance. That inheritance made the 22 year-old Ramsey one of the youngest Super PAC financiers in the world.

Ramsey, who supported Ron Paul's presidential campaign, joined forces with 23 year-old Preston Bates to found the 'Liberty For All' Super PAC. Their goal is to elect so-called "freedom candidates" ? like minded people who support limiting government and promoting civil liberties, although they bristle at being labeled libertarians. Liberty for All, which some have taken to calling the 'Brat PAC,' has already contributed over $3 million dollars to national congressional races since it began seven months ago.

"We're purging the Republican Party of the war-mongering, anti-civil liberties, socially intolerant neo-conservatives," says Ramsey. "We see these people as just as dangerous as the socialists that make up the Democratic Party."

So, what's the PAC's track record? Ramsey and Bates point to the primary election victories for three of the Republican candidates they supported: Tea Party-backed Congressional candidate Thomas Massie in Kentucky, Congressional candidate Kerry Bentivolio in Michigan, and Senate candidate Jeff Flake in Arizona.

While the Liberty For All PAC can stake a claim of success in these races, the PAC has come under criticism for its decision to support Bentivolio in Michigan's 11th Congressional?District race. Bentivolio, a former school teacher and reindeer farmer, once said in a court deposition that he believes he is Santa Claus and resigned from his teaching job after reports that he was intimidating his students. Bates brushes off the criticisms of Bentivolio, saying his creative qualities make him a strong candidate.

As far as the presidential race is concerned, Liberty For All has steered clear of getting involved ever since the general election began. While the Super PAC did support Rep. Ron Paul's primary bid, Ramsey says he sees little difference between President Obama and Mitt Romney in terms of foreign policy and economic policies and thinks there will be little change no matter who wins the election.

With the election just a few days away, this young Super PAC will soon know if their investment paid off. But Ramsey and Bates say they're just getting started and are already looking ahead to the 2014 election, when they plan to target some high-level Republicans, possibly including South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.

To find out more about the Brat PAC and where they will turn their attentions next, check out this week's Spinners and Winners.

Local Voices ? You Should Ask Friends And Family For References ...

The person doing home improvement tasks can easily be discouraged. Bad planning, substandard contractors and biting off more than you can chew are all possibilities. This article will provide you with advice to ensure your home improvements are completed without a hitch. Keep reading!

Before selecting a contractor, interview several companies and learn everything you can about them. Make sure that your contractor has experience with job like you are looking to have done. Are their prices and the scope of their projects on a par with what you have in mind? Ask to see a examples of their work before hiring them to do your home improvement project.

Replace the cupboard doors you have! Not everyone can go out and buy new cabinets. If we just change out the doors, however, we get a new look for a very reasonable price. Measure everything out and get what you need beforehand. Installation can be very simple. You just need to put in a couple of screws!

Fun is an important part of any project. It is vital that you are seriously careful when you are working, but you should also be having fun. If you are not enjoying yourself, you will make some mistakes. If this is what your experience turns into, ask a professional for help.

If you are buying new appliances, it?s important to think about how long they will last. Look for a life expectancy of at least 20 years for a refrigerator and 10 years for a clothes dryer and washing machine. Choose your appliances carefully when updating the rooms in your home.

Don?t get too crazy with color when painting. This will make your rooms look bigger. To increase the amount of space that your room looks like it has, you can add broader, bigger baseboards. Both options are able to be done for little money and make a home look a lot better. mold online

If you are hiring someone to perform your home improvement work, make sure to ask for their references. Think of this in terms of importance as you would when looking to hire an employee. Make sure you run a thorough background check and consider whether or not other have been happy with the services rendered.

If a contractor you?ve hired tells you something, you ought to believe him or her. You have already done the research you need and you?ve found a good contractor. It is in your best interest to believe what he is telling you. If he states that your changes will not work, listen. Or, if he says something will go over-budget, it will. Take the advice given to you by your contractor.

Have fun while you are repairing or upgrading your home. Get some help from friends, siblings or your kids to make it a fun experience. The sense of accomplishment you receive upon completion will be magnified by having people to share it with.

When you imagine your completed outdoor home improvement project, ask yourself if the changes you?re making will look out of place in the neighborhood. If your style won?t mesh well with nearby homes, do you really want your house to stand out in a way that may not be very appealing as a result? You need to consider if the changes you envision will stand out in a good way or just look strange in the surroundings.

If your home is looking a little worse for wear, it might be time to do a little updating. You can make your home improvement projects more effective and less stressful if you give this article?s suggestions a try.

Impact investing looks ready to fly, so what's the problem? | Latest ...

Celso Grecco

16-18 October 2012, SEWF ? Social Enterprise World Forum, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An event hosted by NESsT, with 180 speakers and 650 delegates from 30 countries. Three whole days dedicated to discussing impact investing. Taking all the debates and presentations into account, one thing is certain: the concept of impact investing is definitely on the agenda of High Net Worth Individuals, and it is present in the strategic plans of a good number of corporations and foundations and many potential donors.

Likewise, dozens of social enterprises are putting their efforts towards understanding this new concept, and preparing or changing their structures to become more attractive to this new source of financing. So what?s the problem? Impact investing seems to be a good idea hinging on a common vision shared by all parties involved.

The potential sources of social investment, represented mainly by High Net Worth Individuals and investment funds, have shown a clear interest in impact investing, ?provided that the financial returns remain at market levels or at least just below them?, as they emphasize. Thus, they are willing to compromise a small part of their financial return in the name of social return. But it is a world used to million-euro/dollar deals; it therefore demands huge projects.

Because of this, the majority of social entrepreneurs that head up social enterprises fear that the size of their organizations could stand in the way of successful relationships. Social organizations, whether they are social enterprises or not, are not used to receiving large sums of money, undertaking big projects and delivering financial returns ? all together at the same time.

This was the main concern I heard from social entrepreneurs in the corridors and coffee breaks of the Social Enterprise World Forum, which matches the conversations I?ve had over the last months with many other social enterprises. The impact investing environment is indeed a brand new world of big potential for both sides, social investors and social enterprises. But it is also a world of unexplored relationships that lacks new parameters and innovative metrics.

Quoting Nicole Etchart, NESsT co-founder and CEO: ?We need to align expectations with what is feasible. Donors and investors need to be patient on the financing needs of social enterprises, the amount of time that it takes them to reach break-even and generate profit, and if and when they can really begin to scale. The expected financial return needs to be reasonable, particularly the need to cover the many social costs of social enterprise. And the social sector also needs to provide clear metrics and to spend time educating the philanthropic and investing communities on what they should expect in terms of social impact.?

SEWF Brazil highlighted the need for intermediaries to bridge the gap between the supply and demand side. We need a lot more conversation, understanding and agreement. If we fail to accomplish that, a big opportunity will be wasted.

Celso Grecco is a Brazilian social entrepreneur, Ashoka Fellow and member of NESst?s BAN ? Business Advisory Network.

checklist

As cities affected by Hurricane Sandy begin to assess the damage caused by the record-breaking storm, many of those impacted are preparing for alterations to their work schedules and environment.

Bracing for impact doesn?t have to mean reduced effectiveness, however. Below are some tips and free tools which can help keep you on track ? no matter which way the wind blows:

Emergency Planning

Too often, we underestimate the impact of a storm, believing it will mean little more than heavy traffic and a day or two without electricity. But the human and economic tolls can be great, and preparing thoroughly for the full range of outcomes will maximize your ability to not only manage your work ? but to simply stay safe.

It goes without saying, but pay attention to preparedness and government agencies? warnings, and evacuate if, needed. Map an evacuation route (and an alternate), even if you don?t believe you?re facing immediate danger, and download free apps, such as the one provided by the American Red Cross for tracking the storm and sending emergency distress signals should you face serious danger.

Create a Contingency Plan

Limited public transportation, downed power lines and general chaos might prevent even the hardiest amongst us from keeping to our routines and schedules. That?s why having a contingency plan (this app helps you plan a hurricane checklist) in place can help you maintain momentum in the face of disruptions ? especially since already limited resources may be increasingly strained.

Experts recommend paring down your routine to the essentials by identifying key responsibilities, projects and stakeholders. What must get done and who needs to do it? Does that creative re-design project really need to be completed ASAP ? or can it wait? List the truly critical items in order of priority, and define means for completing them outside of the traditional office environment.

Don?t forget that disruptions can last for several days ?if not weeks. A solid contingency plan should equip you and your colleagues to handle major responsibilities for an unforeseen period of time. If you?re thinking of being back in the office in a couple of days, don?t count on it ? and plan accordingly.? Roads may be impassable. Your office may be flooded or otherwise damaged. Your boss may be unreachable.

Even seemingly simple things, such as finding gasoline or even potable water can get harder as the days go by; free apps such GasBuddy can help you locate stocked gas stations in your area ?or along your evacuation route ?and find the cheapest price.

Assess Your Alternatives

In addition to remembering to back-up key files(try the Egnyte free app) in alternate locations (such as in the cloud or remote servers), you should be aware of alternative solutions to traditional office needs. Can some workers be deployed to work from other cities? Or can some meetings be held remotely, using remote conferencing and collaboration tools?

Holding virtual meetings and collaborating remotely via tools and apps such as iMeet?(click for a free trial) can help you maintain high levels of productivity and save money in shifting work situations.

And because these are cloud-based solutions, they?re less likely to be disrupted by adverse weather in any single geographic area. It also allows you to share notes, files, and meet face to face with a variety of voice-connection options that will minimize the likelihood of disruption ?even if phone or power lines are down.

Hurricanes are intrinsically unpredictable phenomena, and can be expected to wreak havoc on work routines and normal business life. Minimize their impact through sensible planning and precautions ? and above all, stay safe.

PGi is a leader in the sorts of virtual collaboration and meeting tools, such as iMeet and GlobalMeet, which enable people to work from a variety of locations ?even in difficult weather and other unexpected situations.

Unitedcasting | Blog | Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa ...

Hallandale Beach, FL (PRWEB) October 29, 2012

Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa, located on the second floor of 1250 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd, would like to introduce their new Anti-Inflammatory Diet and Nutrition Program to residents and visitors of and around South Florida.

Scientific research has revealed that most modern diseases that plague our society are caused by diet induced chronic inflammation. Just to name a few, many of the conditions that are driven by this can be as severe as heart disease and cancer, or as minor as feeling tired. The program itself consists of a comprehensive consultation and wellness examination that includes a food allergy test, a digitized body fat analysis, and a pH test. This is followed by a thorough consultation and review of all the test results and then followed by a diet plan with a customized nutritional supplementation program,

?It is our belief that this new diet and nutrition program will modernize how we eat and live. In turn, this will help promote a healthier lifestyle and lengthen life spans.? says Dr. DiCarlo. ?By introducing the concept of ?deflaming?, we will reduce and even reverse the devastating effects of long standing inflammation in our bodies with the proper use of food and nutritional supplements.?

Dr. Christopher A. DiCarlo is the founder and president of Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa. He is a Chiropractic physician who is board certified in Anti-Aging Medicine from the American Board of Antiaging Health Practioners as well as certified in numerous other health related fields. He is accompanied by a team of highly educated physicians including Kevin McGrath D.C., James Stock D.C., George Herrera M.D., Anthony Perrotti D.O., Cynthia Chang A.P and their newest member Dr. Christina Kotalik, a Chiropractic Physician & a health and fitness enthusiast who administers the program.

Though inflammation is the body?s natural response to injury or attack by germs, it can also be the foundation to many age-related diseases. It is important to avoid factors that will cause unnecessary inflammation such as an improper diet or an unbalanced pH level. In order to insure a longer and healthier life for all its clients Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa has designed their Anti-Inflammatory Program with this in mind.

Premier Wellness Center and Day Spa is a Health & Wellness Center located in Hallandale and offers a wide array of health services including Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, Non-surgical Orthopedics, Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Anti-Aging Medicine, Hormone Replacement, HCGWeight Loss, and has an exclusive Day Spa and complete fitness center just to name a few. Researchers engineer cartilage from pluripotent stem cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? A team of Duke Medicine researchers has engineered cartilage from induced pluripotent stem cells that were successfully grown and sorted for use in tissue repair and studies into cartilage injury and osteoarthritis. The finding is reported online Oct. 29, 2012, in the journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and suggests that induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs, may be a viable source of patient-specific articular cartilage tissue.

"This technique of creating induced pluripotent stem cells -- an achievement honored with this year's Nobel Prize in medicine for Shimya Yamanaka of Kyoto University -- is a way to take adult stem cells and convert them so they have the properties of embryonic stem cells," said Farshid Guilak, PhD, Laszlo Ormandy Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke and senior author of the study.

"Adult stems cells are limited in what they can do, and embryonic stem cells have ethical issues," Guilak said. "What this research shows in a mouse model is the ability to create an unlimited supply of stem cells that can turn into any type of tissue -- in this case cartilage, which has no ability to regenerate by itself."

Articular cartilage is the shock absorber tissue in joints that makes it possible to walk, climb stairs, jump and perform daily activities without pain. But ordinary wear-and-tear or an injury can diminish its effectiveness and progress to osteoarthritis. Because articular cartilage has a poor capacity for repair, damage and osteoarthritis are leading causes of impairment in older people and often requires joint replacement.

In their study, the Duke researchers, led by Brian O. Diekman, PhD, a post-doctoral associate in orthopaedic surgery, aimed to apply recent technologies that have made iPSCs a promising alternative to other tissue engineering techniques, which use adult stem cells derived from the bone marrow or fat tissue.

One challenge the researchers sought to overcome was developing a uniformly differentiated population of chondrocytes, cells that produce collagen and maintain cartilage, while culling other types of cells that the powerful iPSCs could form.

To achieve that, the researchers induced chondrocyte differentiation in iPSCs derived from adult mouse fibroblasts by treating cultures with a growth medium. They also tailored the cells to express green fluorescent protein only when the cells successfully became chondrocytes. As the iPSCs differentiated, the chondrocyte cells that glowed with the green fluorescent protein were easily identified and sorted from the undesired cells.

The tailored cells also produced greater amounts of cartilage components, including collagen, and showed the characteristic stiffness of native cartilage, suggesting they would work well repairing cartilage defects in the body.

"This was a multi-step approach, with the initial differentiation, then sorting, and then proceeding to make the tissue," Diekman said. "What this shows is that iPSCs can be used to make high quality cartilage, either for replacement tissue or as a way to study disease and potential treatments."

Diekman and Guilak said the next phase of the research will be to use human iPSCs to test the cartilage-growing technique.

"The advantage of this technique is that we can grow a continuous supply of cartilage in a dish," Guilak said. "In addition to cell-based therapies, iPSC technology can also provide patient-specific cell and tissue models that could be used to screen for drugs to treat osteoarthritis, which right now does not have a cure or an effective therapy to inhibit cartilage loss."

In addition to Guilak and Diekman, study authors include Nicolas Christoforou; Vincent P. Willard; Alex Sun; Johannah Sanchez-Adams; and Kam W. Leong.

The National Institutes of Health (AR50245, AR48852, AG15768, AR48182, Training Grant T32AI007217) and the Arthritis Foundation funded the study.

No. 17 Gamecocks overcome Tennessee 38-35

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Marcus Lattimore spoke to his South Carolina teammates from the heart on Friday night as they prepared to face Tennessee.

Don't take anything for granted, Lattimore urged the Gamecocks.

"Act like every play is your last play," defensive end Jadeveon Clowney said, recalling the junior tailback's words.

Now, those players hope Lattimore hasn't played his last game after a horrific knee injury that will likely end his season prematurely for a second straight year.

Coach Steve Spurrier gave few details on Lattimore's damaged right leg, which flopped to the turf like a rag doll's might after a hit in the second quarter of No. 17 South Carolina's 38-35 win over Tennessee on Saturday.

Spurrier said the injury appeared every bit as serious as the torn knee ligaments which caused Lattimore to miss the final six games last season. He required surgery and about six months of rehabilitation to make it back.

Lattimore was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

"He's going to do wonderful things," the coach said, while acknowledging, "I don't know what field of life."

Connor Shaw threw for three touchdowns and a career-high 356 yards. He also ran for another as the Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak. Lattimore had a 28-yard touchdown run, extending his school marks to 41 TDs overall and 38 rushing.

The Vols (3-5, 0-5) nearly rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the final quarter. Tyler Bray drove Tennessee to the Gamecocks' 19 with 1:08 to go before defensive end Jadeveon Clowney forced a fumble to end the series. Tennessee forced a punt and got a final chance, but Victor Hampton intercepted Bray's long pass attempt to seal the win.

The Gamecocks rolled up 510 yards after managing only 368 combined the previous two weeks in losses at LSU and Florida. Tight end Justice Cunningham had six catches for 108 yards and receiver Bruce Ellington had six catches for 101 yards as South Carolina won its third straight over Tennessee for the first time ever in a series that began in 1903.

Bray passed for 368 yards and four touchdowns, three to Zach Rogers.

The Gamecocks hoped to get their offense back on track and Lattimore was a huge part of that plan. He had been slowed by a hip bruise sustained at LSU two weeks ago, limiting him to just three carries in a 44-11 loss at Florida last Saturday. But Spurrier said he was at 100 percent and ready to once again carry the load for South Carolina.

And Lattimore was doing just that, gaining 65 yards in the opening half, including a 28-yard burst for his 41st career touchdown at South Carolina. Everything stopped at Williams-Brice Stadium when Lattimore lay on the turf after a 2-yard pickup right before halftime.

Lattimore was wrapped up from behind by linebacker Herman Lathers as defensive back Eric Gordon came in at the knees. Lattimore's body whipped around, his right leg slamming against the ground.

Trainers immediately rushed out to South Carolina's star, holding him against the ground as he tried to lift up and see what was going on. Lattimore appeared to be sobbing in pain.

After several minutes, Tennessee players came out to wish Lattimore well. South Carolina's players, coaches and staff soon followed and the group surrounded Lattimore as trainers lifted him onto the cart. The crowd chanted Lattimore's name as the cart pulled away, Lattimore's head covered with a towel heading toward the locker room.

"I don't know that I've ever seen anything like that," Spurrier said.

Messages of support filled Twitter from the sports world, including U.S. women's soccer star Abby Wambach, LSU coach Les Miles and Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Spurrier was not surprised, saying Lattimore was loved and admired by many because of his work ethic and attitude.

"As a person, there is none better that I've ever met," the coach said.

A season ago, the Gamecocks relied on veteran Kenny Miles and first-year player Brandon Wilds to make up for Lattimore's absence a year ago. Miles filled in for Lattimore in the second half against the Vols, but Wilds has not played this season because of injury.

Freshman Mike Davis has played sparingly in seven games and should also see more playing time without Lattimore.

South Carolina looked in control most of the half, scoring on three of its first four possessions. Shaw threw touchdown passes of 33 yards to Bruce Ellington and 26 yards to Rory Anderson before Lattimore's TD run.

Tennessee cut the lead to 21-14 on Bray's 37-yard scoring throw to Zach Rogers, the duo's second TD pass of the half. But Shaw ended a 10-play drive on a 1-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left before the half to restore the Gamecocks' two-touchdown lead.

Bray and the Vols nearly pulled off the comeback down the stretch when Rogers hauled in a 22-yard pass in the end zone to bring Tennessee within a field goal. But Clowney's sack and Hampton's late pick saved things for South Carolina.

It's the third straight season Tennessee has opened 0-5 in the SEC.

"It's the same old song and dance on the SEC level," Dooley said. "We had a chance to win and they made a great play, got the ball out and turned it over. All you can is move on."

Spurrier hopes to do that, too, and hopes he can have Lattimore in his backfield as he has the past three seasons.

"Maybe he'll be back next year," Spurrier said. "Maybe it won't be quite as severe as it appeared on the field out there."

Hurricane Sandy powers toward Eastern Seaboard

Interactive: Hurricane Tracker (on this page)

Hurricane Sandy closed in on the United States on Saturday as coastal communities along the East Coast scrambled to prepare for torrential rains, high winds, major flooding and power outages a week before the presidential election.

Governors in states in the hurricane's path declared emergencies, announcing mandatory evacuations of vulnerable areas. New York City officials discussed whether to shut the subway system on Sunday in advance of the storm.

Rain accumulations of up to 12 inches and heavy snowfall inland are considered likely in some areas. As it merges with an Arctic jet stream, forecasters said Sandy has all the ingredients to transform into a "super storm" unlike anything seen over the eastern United States in decades.

On its current projected track, Sandy could make U.S. landfall on Monday night or Tuesday morning anywhere between Maryland and southern New England, forecasters said. Some computer models show a likely landfall between Delaware and the New York/New Jersey area.

The hurricane was headed toward densely populated areas with tens of millions of people. Officials urged residents to stock up on food, water and batteries. Worried residents packed stores, buying generators, candles, food and other supplies in anticipation of power outages. Some local governments announced schools would be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

"They're freaking out," said Joe Dautel, a clerk at a hardware store in Glenside, Penn. "I'm selling people four, five, six packs of batteries -- when I had them."

As the threat of a monster storm began to sink in, shoppers crowded hardware stores and supermarkets looking to stock up on emergency supplies. At a Trader Joe's store in Millburn, New Jersey, shelves were stripped bare of bread, bottled water and milk.

Customers at a Home Depot in Willow Grove, a suburb of Philadelphia, were greeted by big hand-written signs saying, "No generators." The store received a shipment of 50 generators on Friday evening and sold them all within minutes of opening on Saturday, said January Introcaso, one of the store managers.

The store also sold out of flashlights and batteries. It was a similar story at other hardware stores in the area, with candles, tarps and rope also in demand.

Sandy also threatened to disrupt air travel in the region.

Story: Sandy could mean travel trouble

"There's no avoiding a significant storm-surge event over a large area. We just can't pinpoint who's going to get the worst of it," National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said.

President Barack Obama on Saturday morning convened a call with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and other officials to ensure federal resources would be ready to aid state and local agencies responding to the expected severe weather. FEMA is prepositioning water, meals, blankets and other resources should they be needed at support bases along the East Coast, the White House said.

Coastal flooding posed a major threat, particularly in low-lying areas like New York City, the global financial nerve center, and Alexandria, Va., across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," Fugate told reporters, warning of the potential for flooding in Maryland and Pennsylvania, as well as more than 2 feet of snow in West Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania. "This is going to go well inland," he added.

Forecasters: Sandy 'one for record books'

Subway could close
In New York, authorities were considering closing down the city's buses, subways, commuter railroads, bridges and tunnels as early as 7 p.m. on Sunday, when the last commuter trains would depart, with the entire system to be closed down by 3 a.m. Monday, officials said.

Delaware Governor Jack Markell ordered a mandatory evacuation of an estimated 50,000 people in coastal communities on Saturday. New Jersey's Cape May County ordered an evacuation of its barrier islands, home to some popular beach resorts, by Sunday afternoon.

States of emergency were declared in eight states from North Carolina to Massachusetts, as well as Washington, D.C., NBC reported, as Sandy made its way north after killing 41 people in the Caribbean. U.S. officials urged residents to stock up on food, water and batteries. Evacuations were ordered along some coastal areas, including Atlantic City and its casinos beginning Sunday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center briefly downgraded Sandy to a tropical storm early Saturday but said the storm regained hurricane-strength winds just a few hours later.

In a public advisory notice issued at 11 p.m. EDT, the National Hurricane Center said Sandy packed hurricane-force winds of 75 mph, up from earlier reported maximum sustained wind speed of 70 mph. High wind warnings were in effect for the Mid-Atlantic states, Southern New England and portions of Southeastern Virginia.

"Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 105 miles from the center... and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 520 miles," the NHC said.

Sandy was about 360 miles southeast of Charleston, S.C., and was moving northeast at 14 mph, up from 11 mph earlier in the day, the center said.

Travel trouble
Many airlines are posting hurricane-related travel tips online. Some airlines announced fee waivers for customers traveling on certain dates between some airports expected to be affected by the storm.

Customers trying to call airlines to rebook travel by phone Saturday evening were reporting waits of several hours.

Don Morelli, a meteorologist with WSI, a sister company of The Weather Channel, said major flight delays and airport closings starting Saturday evening and lasting through Tuesday were likely.

"The criteria for closing an airport is around 58, 60 miles an hour, which is easily going to be reached for much of the major hubs from D.C. northward to New York City and even into Logan [in Boston]," Morelli said. "Major delays [are] going to be very, very widespread right through mid-week, so [it?s] not a good week to be traveling across the Northeastern U.S."

Election issues
Coming in the hectic run-up to the U.S. presidential election on November 6, the storm presented a challenge to the campaigns of Obama and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.

Obama is canceling campaign stops in Virginia and Colorado early next week because of the hurricane and will instead monitor the storm from the White House, his spokesman said on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday trip to Virginia Beach.

Romney was rescheduling all of his campaign events planned for Virginia on Sunday and flying to Ohio instead.

Sandy is set to deliver potential election surprise

Power outages caused by the storm could continue through the election, NBC meteorologist Bill Karins warned.

"After the storm hits, expect the clean-up and power outage restoration to continue right up through Election Day," Karins said. "Serious and life-threatening weather conditions are expected from Outer Banks to New England."

Share your images of Hurricane Sandy preparations Video: Carolinas, East Coast on watch for Hurricane Sandy

Storm surge: The NHC said that the combination of "a dangerous storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters."

The water could reach the following depths above ground if the peak surge occurs at the time of high tide, the NHC warned:

  • North Carolina: up to 5 feet;
  • Chesapeake Bay: 1 to 2 feet;
  • Ocean City, Md.: 4 to 8 feet;
  • Long Island Sound: 4 to 8 feet.

Karins said he expected coastal flooding would ultimately affect northern New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and southern New England.

Hurricane Specialist Carl Parker, appearing on The Weather Channel, said, "We?re really concerned about the water level rise. ... This storm is going to be blowing water over a huge area ? hundreds of miles ? and that?s why it?s going to really pile up the water, and why the surge could be devastating when it finally comes on shore."

High winds: Tropical storm conditions are expected to first reach parts of the Carolinas by Saturday evening and spread northward during the night and Sunday, the NHC said. Gale-force winds are expected to arrive along portions of the mid-Atlantic Coast by late Sunday and reach Long Island and Southern New England by Monday morning. Winds near hurricane force could reach Mid-Atlantic states and Long Island by late Monday.

Karins said he expected high winds would knock out power for millions of people from Virginia to central New England, with significant damage to trees.

Slideshow: Sandy sets sights on East Coast (on this page)

Heavy snow: Parts of West Virginia and the Appalachian corridor could see more than a foot and possibly up two feet, Louis Uccellini, director of the National Centers for Environmental Protection, told reporters Friday.

Rainfall: "Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are expected over portions of the central mid-Atlantic states...including the Delmarva Peninsula...with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches possible," the NHC notice warned.

Although Sandy is not forecast to be as strong as other recent storms to hit the Northeast -- such as Hurricane Irene in August 2011, which left $4 billion in damage -- it holds the potential to cause significant damage because it will be moving slowly.

Some experts predict at least $1 billion in damage in the United States.

Tips on preparing for Sandy

Story: Busy Atlantic storm season tied to lack of El Nino

"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," Jim Cisco, a forecaster at the National Weather Service's prediction office, told NBC News Friday. "It's going to be a widespread serious storm."

Preparations under way
The town of Islip, New York, ordered the evacuation of all communities on Fire Island Saturday, saying people should leave by no later than 2 p.m. ET Sunday. A state of emergency was also declared.

A voluntary evacuation order was issued Friday afternoon for Cape May County, N.J.. The county emergency office said it was expected to become a mandatory order for the county's barrier islands Sunday, NBCNewYork.com reported. Long Beach Island, N.J., issued a similar voluntary order.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said no evacuations were ordered in the city yet, but officials prepared for the storm's onslaught.

Six hospitals and 41 chronic care facilities in flood-prone areas discharged patients who could be moved to make room for people possibly needing relief. Sixty-five shelters in schools will open Sunday, Bloomberg said. Parks will close Sunday afternoon.

In New Jersey, officials told NBCNewYork.com that shelters will be set up in 18 counties to accommodate roughly 12,000 people and, if needed, the state will mobilize five shelters to house another 5,000 people.

In Connecticut, Gov. Dannel Malloy said 400 National Guard members will be on standby to help with recovery efforts. Malloy warned residents should prepared for extended power outages and severe flooding.

In Virginia, fishermen tied down their boats and merchants began boarding up windows Saturday. Chincoteague officials advised residents who live in low-lying areas to seek shelter ahead of a tidal surge late Sunday.

Rubio leaves Romney bus after daughter?s car accident

Rubio stands outside a Florida Highway Patrol car after leaving the Romney motorcade (Justin Sullivan/Getty Im??

LAKEWOOD CREST, Fla.?Florida Sen. Marco Rubio abruptly dropped off Mitt Romney's campaign bus just east of Tampa on Saturday evening after word that his 12-year-old daughter had been injured in a car accident in Miami and airlifted to a local hospital.

According to his office, Rubio, who had been campaigning with Romney in Florida today, was alerted about his daughter Amanda's accident just after leaving the stage at Romney's second rally of the day in Kissimmee, according his spokesman Alex Conant.

According to Conant, Amanda Rubio, who is the oldest of the senator's four children, was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital and is listed in stable condition. He did not provide any further details about the accident.

But Rubio still boarded Romney's bus as it headed toward the third and final event of the day in Land O'Lakes, Fla?and stayed on the bus for more than an hour. Around 6:45pm, Romney's motorcade abruptly pulled off Interstate 4, and Rubio was seen exiting Romney's campaign bus.

A moment later, Rubio hopped over a highway barricade, where a Florida Highway Patrol car waited. After standing outside the car for a few minutes, Rubio jumped into the patrol car, which sped away with its lights flashing. His office said the senator was en route to Miami.

The Romney campaign offered no immediate comment.

Bombings, house raids in Iraq leave 31 dead

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Bombings that hit markets and other insurgent strikes primarily targeting Iraq's Shiite community killed 31 people on Saturday, challenging government efforts to promote a sense of stability by preventing attacks during a major Muslim holiday.

The bloodshed underscored the difficulties facing Iraq's leadership as it struggles to keep its citizens safe. Authorities had increased security in hopes of preventing attacks during the four-day Eid al-Adha celebrations, when people are off work and families gather in public places.

The deadliest blast happened on the outskirts of Baghdad and struck near playground equipment that had been set up for the holiday in a market in the eastern neighborhood of Bawiya. Police officials said eight people were killed, including four children. Another 24 people, including children, were wounded, they added.

"Nobody expected this explosion because our neighborhood has been living in peace, away from the violence hitting the rest of the capital," said Bassem Mohammed, a 35-year-old father of three in the neighborhood who was startled by the blast.

"We feel sad for the children who thought that they would spend a happy time during Eid, but instead ended up getting killed or hurt."

Elsewhere, a bomb attached to a bus carrying Iranian Shiite pilgrims killed five people and wounded nine, according to police. The bomb, hidden on the underside of the bus, detonated as the pilgrims were heading to a Shiite shrine in Baghdad to mark the holiday.

Authorities have said they planned to increase the number of checkpoints, shut some roads and deploy extra personnel during the holiday period.

They are also relying more on undercover intelligence agents, said Lt. Col. Saad Maan Ibrahim, a spokesman for the interior ministry. He emphasized that both bombings took place on the edge of the capital rather than in densely populated areas.

"The terrorists apparently weren't able to get to the heart of the city. So they chose to attack soft targets on the outskirts," he said.

In the northern city of Mosul, gunmen broke into the houses of two Shabak families, killing a boy and his parents in one and a mother and daughter in the other, according to police. A bomb exploded near the house of another Shabak family, wounding six family members.

Shabaks are ethnically Turkomen and Shiite by religion. Most Shabaks were driven out of Mosul by Sunni militants during the sectarian fighting a few years ago.

In Tuz Khormato, about 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb exploded near in a neighborhood with a Turkomen Shiite majority. Mayor Shalal Abdoul said 11 people were wounded, including three children.

On Saturday night, police said a car bomb explosion near a market in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr city killed seven people and wounded 15 others. Half an hour later, a second car bomb went off in one of Sadr city's bus stations, killing six people.

Medics in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Eid al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice, is a major Muslim holiday that commemorates what Muslims believe was the Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, the Biblical Ishmael, as a test of his faith from God. Christians and Jews believe another of Abraham's sons, Isaac, was the one almost sacrificed.

The holiday, which began Friday, marks the end of the hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims worldwide typically slaughter lambs and other animals to commemorate the holiday, sharing some of the meat with the poor.

Violence has ebbed across Iraq, but insurgents frequently attack security forces and civilians in an attempt to undermine the country's Shiite-led government.

Holidays are a particular time of concern for security forces. A wave of attacks shortly before another Muslim holiday in August, Eid al-Fitr, killed more than 90 people in one of the deadliest days in Iraq this year.

Academic and Creative Writing Journal Vikram Karve: HOW TO DIE ...

HOW TO DIE A HAPPY DEATH

A Short Story

By

VIKRAM KARVE

From my Creative Writing Archives:

Here is one of my recent pieces of creative writing - a fiction short story I wrote last year, on a day the stock market was fluctuating wildly. That time I had titled the story PUNTER but now I feel the underlying message is much more.

Do tell me if you liked the story.

He was not a Bull.?

He was not a Bear.?

He was a Punter.?

Yes, that?s we nicknamed him: ?Punter?.

He did not bother about gobbledygook like fundamentals or technicals.?

He did not have an inkling of financial algorithms and risk heuristics and never ?analyzed? ? he just speculated by sheer gut feeling.

He instinctively knew how to time the market.?

That?s why he always made money, whether the stock market boomed or crashed. He had made so much money that he could have retired and enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle, but then, he had got addicted to making money by playing the stock market.

Yes, he got a kick out of ?making? money rather than ?enjoying? his money.?

So despite his advancing years he kept on playing the market with more and more vigor and continued to make more and more money.?

Earlier he would spend his entire time in the ring at the Stock Exchange on?Dalal Street.?

Now he would sit all day, all stressed up, in his room, glued to his TV, flipping all the financial channels, his fingers on his laptop for instant online trading via the internet.?

He had no interests, no hobbies, no pleasures, no loves ? he just enjoyed one thing ? playing the stock market and making money.?

One day his lifestyle took its toll and he had a heart attack.?

They rushed him to the best hospital in Mumbai and they all said he would require a bypass surgery.?

So they admitted him to the best room in the hospital.?

Instead of relaxing there, he sat whole day watching the stock-market channels on the wall-mounted TV, doing feverish online trading on his laptop and he continued making a lot a money and he was very happy. But the doctors were not happy and said that all this share-market business was causing him a lot of excitement which was not good for his already erratic heart, so one morning they suddenly removed the TV and the laptop and even banned all visitors except me and his son, who was a successful investment banker. ?Total rest,? the doctors warned all of us, ?he needs total rest, both mental and physical, and only then will he be able to stabilize and be ready for the surgery.?

It was the first time he had to suffer a day of total rest isolated from the outside world and it was the worst day of his life.?

The entire morning he kept asking about stock prices and asked me for my cell-phone to connect up and find out, but I refused since we were told to strictly isolate him from that world.?

I could realize that he was passing though hell, unimaginable mental agony at not getting information about the very thing that had been his bread and butter, even the?raison d'etre?of his existence. After lunch he dozed off, and then he suddenly he woke up and asked me, ?What is the time?? ?Good. There is still time. I want to speak to my son.? ?He is coming at 4...? ?No. I want to speak to him now. It is urgent.? ?He?ll be busy now, in his office?? ?I told you it is urgent. Just get him on the phone?? he said excitedly, his breathing getting heavy.

?Okay. Okay. Calm down,? I said.?

I dialed his son?s mobile number, and when the son came on line, I asked him to speak to his father. ?Sell all shares,? the man shouted at his son via the mobile phone. ?What?? I could hear his son?s surprised voice. ?Don?t ask any questions. Just do what I say. Sell all my shares, understand, all my shares, everything. Do it now. Today. Before the closing bell. Sell everything online. Right now. You know the user id and?password of my account, don't you...? ?Okay, Papa,? I could hear his son?s voice before he disconnected. He kept on pestering me to ring up his son and confirm, so I rang up his son half an hour later. ?Yes, Papa, I have sold all the shares in online trading,? the son confirmed. The old man seemed tremendously relieved and went to sleep peacefully.

That night, at home, sitting before my TV set, I watched with concern as all the share-market experts on the financial channels predicted that the market was very solid and bullish and recommended that everyone buy shares as the market was going to go up and up.?

?Invest ... Invest ... Invest ... Buy ... Buy ... Buy ...??all the experts said in unison.?

The market was at an all time high but things were looking so good that it was going to rise phenomenally and your investment would probably double in a few months, all the experts predicted. They kept quoting analysis in jargon I never understood to substantiate their predictions.

Next morning the stock-market crashed.?

It was the biggest fall ever in the history of the share-market.?

Most investors were wiped out.?

Everyone incurred big losses. Except the old man and me.

Did I say: ?The old man and?me???

Dear Reader, you?re surprised, aren?t you??

Let me tell you what I did.?

The moment the Punter had finished speaking to his son, I went outside the room and I called up my broker and told him to immediately sell off all my shares.

The Punter had made a huge profit and, as always, along with him, I too had made a small fortune.?

As always, I had blindly followed the Punter and, as always, I had profited by blindly imitating whatever he did in the stock market. The moment he heard the news (from a careless nurse who told the old man that the hospital was abuzz with news of the stock-market crash) the Punter got so excited that he almost went crazy with excitement and happiness. The frenzy of ecstasy caused his blood pressure to go haywire, his heartbeats ran amok, and suddenly, he collapsed and died. I gave a condolence speech at the old man?s funeral in which I praised him profusely and told everyone how I had made a fortune in the stock-market by just following him blindly.

Later,?the old man?s?son took me aside and asked me, ?Did you really sell all your shares??

?Yes,? I said, ?I had blind faith in your father.? ?I wish I had blind faith in his mysterious ways. But I am an investment banker. I don?t go by gut instinct, like my father did. I analyze things. I never imagined the stock market would crash so badly. In fact I thought the market would go up and it would be foolish to sell such excellent blue chip shares. So, I never sold those shares. I am big fool. Had I listened to him and sold all the shares I would have made a big fortune. But I did not sell those shares,? said the young man, with a tone of regret in his voice. ?You never sold the shares??? ?Then why did you lie to him?? ?Because I wanted him to die happy. I lied to my father because I wanted my father to die a happy death.?
