Spirit of design lifts region

de atelier architects’ design for the Ketel One Bar Competition

New technological freedoms are making the Bellarine the design engine room of Victoria, providing families with great lifestyles, and strengthening our regional economy at the same time.

Today, if you run a business that involves planning, project building, architecture, media or an expanding list of other occupations, all you need is a laptop and phone. The result has seen thousands of people seizing the opportunities of getting away from ?the big smoke? and moving to the Bellarine Peninsula.

There are now more than 25,000 small businesses across the region (including the Surf Coast), outstripping small business numbers in Geelong. This month we saw a classic example brought to light in Ocean Grove, with a local architecture company winning a prestigious design award.

Leon Eyck and Briony Darcy from de atelier architects have set another design benchmark, receiving one of three commendations in the national interior design Ketel One Bar Competition. As well as being great designers, Mr Eyck and Ms Darcy are also a terrific example of the demographic trend that is changing our region, improving sustainability and creating employment.

Ms Darcy elaborates: ?My husband and I moved out of Melbourne five years ago to the Bellarine. We worked from home for a couple of years, and then moved into an office space where we now have five staff.

?We work five minutes from home, which is better than travelling an hour and a half to Melbourne, which we used to do. There are huge benefits in that.

?We serve clients all over the place, with 50 per cent of our clients still from Melbourne. We do mainly multi-unit residential architecture, but are now also doing a fair bit of commercial office design.

?Our unit designs now have a capacity to have a home office, but you really only need a computer space now, and they are saying the PC will be gone in just a few years.

?We were really stoked with the commendation. We have a focus on sustainable design, which has beauty. We want to deliver working and living environments that improve people?s lives.?

The competition was to design a ?high end? spirit bar, to be used at the national awards in front of Australia?s most prominent architects.

Mr Eyck and Ms Darcy?s story is illustrative of the many new design companies now adding to the style and culture of the region. They are strengthening the local economy and its sustainability as the region diversify from a reliance on the heavy footprint of some of the large manufacturing industries.
