For most of my life, I didn't care much for pens, finding that it was just too much trouble to keep track of them, so I would just buy a package of disposable pens every so often, but once I got a job where my signature needs to look good, I needed a good fountain pen. The reason I say this is because when I first got promoted to partner at my law firm, I was still using the old cheap pens from the grocery store.
But as I was watching the other members of the firm sign contracts and other legally binding documents, I realized that my signature was weak and silly looking. I wanted to figure out what the difference was and noticed that everyone was using handmade fountain pens. A couple of the secretaries were even using handmade rollerball pens that just looked amazing. My favorites, though, were the custom fountain pens used by Burt, another one of the partners.
His signatures always looked like a work of art, in spite of his poor penmanship, because the pens he used left such a brilliant line on the paper. I was so embarrassed and self-conscious of my signature that I asked him where he had gotten the pens. He directed me to a website where I saw many of the pens that I had seen around the office.
I knew that I had to get a few for myself, but first, I had to decide what kind of pen I wanted. Of course, there were custom pens, that would fit my needs pretty well, but I needed to know if I wanted a rollerball pen or a fountain pen. I eventually settled on a rollerball style of pen when I saw that I could get a wooden rollerball pen that was classy and elegant, just the way I wanted to feel when I wrote my signature.
I placed my order, getting enough pens that if I misplaced one of them, would still be enough to have around the office. The time that I spent waiting for them to arrive was very difficult for me, and I tried to avoid signing anything that wasn't absolutely essential. Finally, they did come and I felt a surge of self-esteem as I practiced my signature with them. When the next big contract rolled around, I was ready to just casually pull out my new pen and sign away, feeling like I had finally arrived.
