BAMAKO, Mali - The interim president of Mali has requested five battalions and air support from neighboring countries to try to take back the country's north from Islamist rebels linked to al-Qaida. The Associated press has seen a copy of the request.
Although the appeal was delivered days ago to the 15 heads of state that sit on the West African regional bloc, it has not yet been made public in Mali, sowing confusion. On Friday, presidential spokesman Diarra Diakite said he had nothing to say on the matter and said he had not seen the request.
A military official who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter said that the interim president made the request without the consent of the soldiers who led Mali's recent coup.
