THE US operations of gaming company Atari - which once wowed the public with titles like Pong and Asteroids - have filed for bankruptcy.
The gaming pioneer's US branches have made the move in an effort to separate from their French parent company.
The US operations are hoping to find alternative funding in order to continue developing games for digital and mobile platforms.
Parent company Atari SA - formerly Infogrames Entertainment SA - is reported to be suffering financial problems which are preventing the release of new games.

The US-based Atari operations said in a statement that they expect to sell off all their assets within the next few months.
Those assets include the brand logo, as well as titles including Pong, Asteroids, Centipede, and Missile Command.
Over recent years, the company has shifted its focus away from producing new console games, and towards making versions of its classic titles for mobile and tablet.
Martin Gaston, News Editor of gaming website GameSpot said: ?Atari has been in a downward spiral for decades.
"But if the U.S. arm of the company can successfully find a buyer and break free of its French parent then, hopefully, we could see this once-great publisher come back to life in the lucrative mobile and digital space.
"I'd say it's unlikely, but who wouldn't want to see Atari return to form??
The company celebrated the 40th anniversary of its greatest hit, tennis simulator Pong, in November last year.
The title has been adapted for almost every gaming console ever made, including the PlayStation, Nintendo DS, and PSP.
